Section 1 - Create a Quiz with the Critical Settings (Classic Quizzes)
To create a quiz,
- Go to the Quizzes page
- Click on the Add Quiz button
- Select Classic Quizzes option
- Click the Submit button
Set the Quiz Options
You need to choose from a variety of options on the Details page.
- Input the quiz name
- Select the Quiz Type; for more information see:
Stage 1 - Practice Quiz
Stage 2 - Graded Quiz - (Optional) Enable Shuffle Answers to randomize choices in questions such as multiple-choice
- Set the Time Limit by entering the number of minutes for a quiz attempt; for more information see:
Set the Available Period of the Quiz - DO NOT allow Multiple Attempts
- Uncheck the option Let Students See Their Quiz Responses
- (Optional) Require an access code - require students to enter an access code to take the quiz
- (Optional) Filter IP addresses - require students to take the quiz from computers with fixed IP addresses, such as those in CSC Teaching Studios

Set the Available Period of the Quiz
Then click the Save button.
(Notes: If there is any technical issue during the quiz, the student may restart the computer and then resume the attempt. However, the countdown timer never stops.)
Add Questions to a Quiz
Revisit and edit the quiz.
- Click the Edit button
- Click the Questions tab
- Click the Add New Question button
- Enter the question information and select the question type as shown in the Canvas instruction How do I create a quiz with individual questions?
- Remember to click the Save button before exiting the Questions page to keep all your changes
(Optional) Randomize Quiz Questions in Question Group
Revisit and edit the quiz.
In the Question tab,
- Click the Add New Question Group button
- Input the question group name
- Decide how many questions you want Canvas to randomly select from the group *
- Input the number of points assigned to each question #
- Click the Create Group button
- Click the Add button in the group to build questions inside this question group

* Note: Picking 5 questions from a question group of 10 means 5 questions will be randomly selected in each quiz attempt. To randomize only the order of the questions, pick all questions (i.e. pick 10 questions from a question group of 10).
# Note: All questions in a question group are worth the same points. Create different question groups if your questions are worth different points. For example, pick 10 MCs in question group A with 1 point for each and pick 3 essay questions in question group B with 10 points for each.
(Optional) Embed Image in a Question
If any image needs to be embedded in a question, please first upload the question image file(s) into a folder and set the permission Only available with link.
- Click the Files link from the course navigation
- Click the Add Folder button to create a folder
- On the created folder, click the published icon
- Select the Only available with link option
- Click the Update button
- Click on the folder link and then upload image file(s) in the folder
- Set schedule student availability of the file(s) for further protection (optional)
You can set student availability of the uploaded image file(s) the same as the quiz period to avoid early access as shown in the Canvas instruction How do I restrict files and folders? > Schedule Availability
- Embed the image(s)
After uploading the image files, go to the quiz and then add a question (chapter: Add Questions in a Quiz). On the Rich Content Editor of the question field, click the image option arrow and then Course Images as shown in the Canvas instruction How do I embed images from Canvas into the Rich Content Editor?
Set the Available Period of the Quiz
Click Manage Due Date and Assign To, set the time limit by entering the number of minutes for a quiz attempt.
(Note: If your students are taking the timed quiz, the timer on the right sidebar shows the remaining time and counts down until time expires.)
Set the quiz available period.
- Available from:
The date and time when the quiz will become available for students to access - Until:
The date and time where all existing quiz attempts will be submitted by the system automatically - Due date:
The date and time when students should complete the quiz
(Note: Please make sure the available period is longer than the time limit.)
For example, you may set the available period of a 3-hour quiz (time limit = 180 minutes) as 2:00 pm to 5:15 pm on 4 May. Your students will have different time limits depending on when they start the quiz.

(Note: You are recommended to make the quiz available 15 minutes earlier if Respondus LockDown Browser is enabled, i.e. making the quiz available from 1:45 pm to 5:15 pm in this example. Each quiz attempt will last for 180 minutes or less.)
