Terry Leung’s personal development is closely intertwined with CityUHK, as he has spent a significant portion of his academic and professional career here. He graduated from the then Department of Biology and Chemistry in 2012 and worked as a research assistant and graduate teaching assistant, respectively, at CityUHK in the following year.

He subsequently left CityUHK, but in 2020, leveraging his expertise in laboratory safety acquired from various institutions, Terry returned to the University and joined the newly established Laboratory Safety Unit as a Compliance Manager (Laboratory Safety), leading a team of eight and overseeing the safety of more than 500 laboratories on campus.

During his university years, Terry embarked on an exchange programme in Norway, where he enhanced his scientific knowledge, and was inspired to observe things from a macro perspective and face challenges with a positive and proactive attitude to always do his best.

For Terry, CityUHK’s laboratories have been the main place of his academic pursuits and career development. Returning to CityUHK with a strong sense of belonging and collaborating with his former professors and laboratory technicians filled him with excitement.

As the Compliance Manager (Laboratory Safety), Terry’s main responsibility is to oversee laboratory safety and regulatory compliance issues in teaching and research activities to ensure the health and safety of staff and students. He conducts regular safety inspections of the laboratories, checking to ensure the proper storage of chemicals, adherence to laboratory standard operating procedures and the proper function of the chemical fume hoods, and ensuring that users comply with safety guidelines and maintain a safe and healthy laboratory environment.

He also provides technical advice for various risk assessments to identify potential hazards associated with different research projects, experimental procedures, apparatus and equipment, and to formulate timely measures to mitigate these risks in the research laboratories. Terry also actively participates in the planning and design review of new laboratories, offering recommendations for improvement.

Terry played a pivotal role in establishing a new chemical control system for the Laboratory Safety Unit. He hopes to further enhance this system within the next two to three years to ensure that all academic departments in CityUHK comply with Hong Kong regulations and meet the international standard requirements for risk management, and chemical procurement, usage, storage and disposal. This system stands as one of his proudest achievements at CityUHK.

Having witnessed CityUHK's rapid development in scientific research over the years, Terry has gained a deeper understanding of the importance of laboratory safety. In 2023, he achieved international certification and was conferred the credential of Certified Industrial Hygienist, granted by the Board of Global EHS Credentialing (BGC). This accomplishment bolstered his confidence and determination to continue to contribute to the enhancement of the laboratory safety culture and awareness at CityUHK.
