“Human health is better protected when animal health is not endangered.”
Monica Chan Hiu-man embarked on a journey in veterinary medicine after battling depression and experiencing the impact of the SARS epidemic. At CityUHK, she has eagerly immersed herself in research on zoonotic diseases, utilising big data to analyse infectious diseases' features, risks, and causes. Monica's fascination with this field has deepened, leading her to very specific career aspirations.
One of Monica's greatest challenges was coming face to face with death during her internship at a veterinary institution. Despite her best efforts, she couldn't save a dying cat, a poignant lesson that taught her the limitations of treatment.
Outside her studies, Monica founded the Veterinary Medicine Society, a platform dedicated to advocating for animal rights and One Health in Hong Kong. She aims to foster connections between the industry and students through organising various activities where distinguished guests shared their experiences and discussed crucial issues surrounding monitoring and preventing infectious diseases.
Monica is keen to broaden her horizons by attending international conferences and staying up-to-date with the latest research in public health. She firmly believes in the interconnectedness of human health, animal health, and the environment, and she is determined to protect animals and create a healthier world.
Monica's journey as a fully trained research veterinarian tackling zoonotic diseases continues to unfold, driven by her unwavering commitment to making a difference. Her dreams of safeguarding both humans and animals through her work remain at the forefront of her aspirations.
