“My Mongolia trip was an important milestone for my personal growth.”
In the summer of 2023, Constance Lee Sze-ching joined an eight-day trip to Mongolia in the Service Outreach Experience Programme organised by Student Development Services. During the trip, she and other students from various departments volunteered at an eco-farm and taught at a local primary school, interacting with the local people and experiencing their culture.
Constance said the most memorable part of the trip was working on the eco-farm. “As an urbanite, I had never worked in a rural area. The days working on the farm were tough but also very special because I had an opportunity to experience Mongolian nomadic culture. I also stayed away from social media and felt closer to the natural environment and fresh air,” she said.
In addition to working on the eco-farm, she volunteered at a local school, which provided another unique experience. In one class, Constance noticed that some students had difficulty using origami to make rice dumplings, while others cut the paper in the wrong direction. She realised that students have different learning abilities and learn at a different pace, so they need to be provided with appropriate assistance. "I learned to think about how to lead a team and also to put myself in the shoes of others to help them achieve their goals," she said.
Constance encountered many unexpected difficulties during her trip, but the experience allowed her to step out of her comfort zone and try new things, providing an important milestone in her personal growth.
