Keith Ling Long-hei
Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine
CityUHK Tiger student
“As vets, we speak up for animals with no voice.”
Keen to protect the health of animals and people, Keith Ling chose the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) programme at CityUHK to equip himself professionally as a veterinarian. Zoonotic diseases that threatened public health and caused economic losses in livestock farms inspired him to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. In addition, Keith is amazed at how veterinarians treat "patients" who cannot speak for themselves.
He is passionate about promoting the One Health concept, which recognises the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in safeguarding the health of animals, humans and the environment.
CityUHK's Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences is the first and the only vet school in Hong Kong. In collaboration with Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine, the BVM programme trains students in animal welfare, food safety, aquaculture and emerging infectious diseases, aligning with Keith’s interests.
CityUHK Farm, equipped with state-of-the-art technologies and facilities, allows students to gain hands-on experience and acquire animal husbandry and farm management skills. Practical opportunities have boosted Keith’s confidence in handling different animal species under the watchful eye of world-class professors always on hand to answer his questions.
The most unforgettable moment in Keith’s studies was his first visit to a local pig farm. The pungent smell aroused his interest in finding different ways to tackle the odour issue on livestock farms, improving the working environment of farmers and creating a better living environment for livestock.
Winning the Innovation and Technology Scholarship in 2023 allowed Keith to visit the mainland and overseas to learn about the latest technologies in livestock odour control.
In the summer of 2023, he attended a short course at Imperial College London about diet and nutrition, environmental toxins and drug development. He also conducted a research project with other passionate students. More overseas experience will include extramural studies at Cornell in the US.
Keith will continue exploring the veterinary field and improving the world so humans and animals can live together harmoniously.
