“Nothing is impossible, as long as one dares to make the ascent.”
Jerry Wang is an undergraduate student in the Department of Economics and Finance and the founder and CEO of start-up company Kirisame RegTech Limited. Balancing academics and entrepreneurship is not easy, especially for an undergraduate. But with his determination and the support he received from the CityUHK’s entrepreneurship programme, Jerry has risen to the challenge.
Before enrolling at CityUHK, Jerry had no plans to start a business. However, during his first year, CityUHK launched HK Tech 300, a large-scale flagship innovation and entrepreneurship programme, which sparked his interest in entrepreneurship. Jerry had already planned to pursue a career in risk management and regulation. In his second year, he gained valuable experience through internships in the Banking Supervision Department of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong.
These internships deepened his understanding of regulatory policies and risk management, inspiring him to establish a financial regulatory technology company. His vision is for the company to leverage artificial intelligence and data analytics to provide a comprehensive stress-testing platform that allows financial institutions to assess the compliance of their products and services with regulatory requirements and to simulate various scenarios to aid in risk management.
The stage from zero to one is the hardest part of entrepreneurship. After a long period of planning and listening to the advice of his mentors and professors, his start-up idea received seed funding last year, gradually turning his dream into reality. Subsequently, with the recommendation of CityUHK, his company secured the next round of investment from Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation.
Jerry took a year off from his studies to focus on managing his company. Once its growth stabilised, he returned to campus to complete his final year of studies. Reflecting on his entrepreneurial journey, Jerry is particularly grateful for CityUHK’s support for innovation and entrepreneurship. The university’s up-to-date curriculum has also enabled him to apply his classroom learning to real-world practice. For Jerry, the key to success lies in continuous experimentation. He advises that even if an idea does not work out initially, one should not give up, but instead review the failures and persevere to meet future challenges.
