Men’s and Women’s Rugby Teams
Champions
Intercollegiate Rugby Sevens Competition 2023-2024
“Teamwork makes the dream work!”
A new record was set by the rugby teams of City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), who won the championship in both the men’s and women’s events of the 2023-24 Rugby Sevens Competition, organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China (USFHK). In addition, Ng Yuk-shing and Shek Ching-yi, CityUHK student athletes, were crowned the USFHK Most Valuable Players (Rugby) at the USFHK Annual Prize Presentation Ceremony in April 2024.
The men’s team agreed that the key to their success was their belief that “Teamwork makes the dream work!” Treating all members as good friends, they support each other on and off the field. “What makes me enjoy playing rugby so much”, said Kobe Chan Chi-kwong, captain of the men’s team, “is its emphasis on teamwork. Members of different stature and skills complement each other.”
Yuk-shing praised the strong tradition of CityUHK’s rugby team. “The solid foundation set by senior members over the years has resulted in an excellent team spirit, making us feel like being part of a big family. The candid and effective communication among members helps us work together smoothly, and that’s why we have won the championship for three consecutive years.”
Michelle Law Nga-wun, captain of the women’s team, said that it was a wonderful achievement winning both the men’s and women’s events in the same year. “It was a tough challenge, as we had fewer members than other teams. However, we were very serious about each training session. We took the initiative to practice, even when our coaches were not able to come.”
The coaches and former team members were very helpful. “Our coaches not only trained us for USFHK competitions, but also helped us improve our rugby skills and develop a positive attitude,” said Michelle. After graduating, former team members came back to share their experience and skills by joining the training sessions or playing friendly matches with current members.
As some of the team members graduated this year, the future task of keeping the championship title must be taken up by the younger members. Although the members who have graduated may not become full-time rugby athletes, some of them will continue to take part in local competitions, as rugby has become part of their life. They are all very willing to share their experience and join the training sessions with current members. By extending the spirit of helping each other and dedicating their efforts without reservation, they hope the CityUHK rugby teams will win the championship in both the men’s and women’s events of the USFHK rugby competition next year.
