In this section, you can see the script of a poster presentation done in the Student Research Showcase held at the City University of Hong Kong in September, 2019. This time you need to find out all of the language features specific to the genre of poster presentation.
In the script, identify the genre features by:
(1) highlighting the word(s)/phrase(s)/sentence(s) pertaining to a particular feature with the use of your mouse;
(2) annotating the highlighted part(s) in the box(es) that pop out.
At this stage, you should have enough practice in the previous analytical exercises. So this time, there are no guiding questions. You will need to rely on your acquired knowledge regarding the structural, sentential and lexical features of poster presentations to finish this exercise on your own.
Finally, you may check your answers by clicking the “Answer” button. The same script will pop up with all the features highlighted. You may then view the annotations of the features by moving the mouse cursor to the highlighted parts one by one.
Studying in university = successful in career?
Hi! My name is Alan. I am a student in the English for Academic Purposes 2 in Semester B this year . My research topic concerns whether studying at university allows students to be successful in their career. In today’s Hong Kong , many people think that studying in university is important as graduates can have a better future, like having jobs with higher salary or having more professional knowledge. However, we don’t know the opinions of students. Do they think it is necessary to study in university? We aim to find out the answer by investigating whether university education is useful and vital for students' career.
For our methodology, we collected both quantitative and qualitative data. The questionnaire was distributed to around 45 undergraduates in our university. We also invited 9 students to be interviewed. Here are some examples of the questions we asked in the interviews.
There are three significant findings in our results. First of all , career is found to be the most important factor that motivated students to study in university. Here we can see that Hong Kong was the most preferred place for students to work. And over 95% of the students agreed that university education made them more competitive. In our interviews, we found that students define success as finding a good job and living a happy life. It is because they could get enough salary to maintain their daily lives without caring about others.
Meanwhile , we found that gaining more competitiveness, applying skills in the related jobs, earning a lot of money and living happily are the meanings of success from students’ point of view. In addition, they thought that the essential factors to be successful in a career are income and education. They also thought that presentation skills could be improved after studying at university because they were required to present their research findings in front of professors or foreign students.
This is all about my research. Thank you for your attention.
