All genre features (a)

In this section, you can see the script of a poster presentation done in the Student Research Showcase held at the City University of Hong Kong in September, 2019. This time you need to find out all of the language features specific to the genre of poster presentation.

In the script, identify the genre features by:
(1) highlighting the word(s)/phrase(s)/sentence(s) pertaining to a particular feature with the use of your mouse;
(2) annotating the highlighted part(s) in the box(es) that pop out.

At this stage, you should have enough practice in the previous analytical exercises. So this time, there are no guiding questions. You will need to rely on your acquired knowledge regarding the structural, sentential and lexical features of poster presentations to finish this exercise on your own.

Finally, you may check your answers by clicking the “Answer” button. The same script will pop up with all the features highlighted. You may then view the annotations of the features by moving the mouse cursor to the highlighted parts one by one.

The effect of participation in school societies on university life

Hello. I am Ken. I studied in the English Academic Purposes 2 in Semester B this year . My poster is about the effect of participation in school societies on university life. Over the past 10 years, there have been a lot of research showing that joining school societies have both positive and negative impact on university students. However, do you know what the students think about joining school activities?

As the impact of participating in school societies on the university life of undergraduates has not been studied, we conducted this research to find out the opinions of students about the promotion of different school societies and the impact of joining school societies on university life.

46 university students completed a questionnaire and 9 students had a 5 minutes face-to-face interview.

Let’s look at the quantitative result. First , 59% of the students thought that joining school societies was not necessary. The number of students who felt positive about the promotional activities were more or less the same as those who felt negative. Most of the respondents agreed that joining school societies could develop new skills and broaden students’ social circle. Besides , nearly a quarter of the respondents ranked joining school societies as the second most important element in university life.

So how about the qualitative results? One of the interviewees thought that the beat demonstration was annoying. However , another one said that some promotional activities were quite interesting. At the same time, an interviewee said that joining school societies may waste his study time.

To sum up, students were annoyed mainly because of the noisy beat demonstration. Some students thought that some promotional activities were creative, for example, the members of the drama society cosplayed different characters to promote their society. Meanwhile, students tended to think that joining school societies was beneficial to their university life.

Thank you.
