The Student Research Showcase was a UGC-funded event organized by the Chan Feng Men-ling Chan Shuk-lin Language Centre (LC) on 20th September, 2019 from 12 pm to 6 pm in Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin Academic Building of the City University of Hong Kong. The event was held to provide CityU students with an opportunity to present their research findings to various faculty, staff and students of the university in the form of academic posters.
The Showcase was kicked off by the keynote speeches given by Professor Diane Pecorari, i.e. the Acting Head of LC/Head of the Department of English, and Mr. Stephen Bolton, i.e. the Programme Leader of EL0200 English for Academic Purposes. This was then followed by the poster presentations which lasted for 5 hours in the Atrium, Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin Academic Building.
19 students of EL0200B English for Academic Purposes II were selected to be the Student Ambassadors of the Showcase. They presented their research of various topics, including but not limited to the use of credit cards, the accommodation of students, absenteeism in university, students’ attitudes towards e-learning, and the gap between local and mainland students. All of which were closely related to the life of CityU students and teachers.
The variety of topics and the performance of the presenters were applauded by the attendees of the event:
“The topic that the students present are of different topics and can give me more information about things other than studies.” ~A student visitor.
“It is so amazing to see such an event. I wish I could present my work in this way too.” ~A student visitor.
“It is great to see that the undergraduates finally got a chance to act like real academic researchers and presenters.” ~A PhD student of CityU.
“The passion of the presenter makes me want to stay and listen to them.” ~An instructor of CityU.
Attended by 309 students, instructors and professors from various departments of CityU, the event successfully provided the undergraduate presenters with an opportunity to increase the impact of their research through numerous exchanges with heterogeneous audience across the university campus.
The Organizing Committee would like to give heartfelt thanks to all students and colleagues who made the event possible and successful. It is hoped that similar events would be organized in the future.
