Sentential Features (b)

In this section, you can see the script of a poster presentation done in the Student Research Showcase held at the City University of Hong Kong in September, 2019. Are there any sentential features specific to poster presentations? Where are they located?

In the script, identify the sentential features specific to poster presentations by:
(1) highlighting the word(s)/phrase(s)/sentence(s) pertaining to a particular sentential feature with the use of your mouse;
(2) annotating the highlighted part(s) in the box(es) that pop out.

The following guiding questions will help you do the analysis along the way:
A. During the poster presentation, the audience are supposed to stand right beside your poster. How do you increase your interaction with the audience in this case?
B. What tense should we use in the introduction? Why?
C. What tense should we use in the methodology? Why?
D. What is the way to emphasize our active role in the research process?

Finally, you may check your answers by clicking the “Answer” button. The same script will pop up with all the features highlighted. You may then view the annotations of the features by moving the mouse cursor to the highlighted parts one by one.

Absenteeism in university

Hello, I am Lee King Him. Have you seen a lecture hall with many empty seats? Or have you tried skipping lesson? Have you wondered why many students want to skip lectures?

You may have an answer in your mind already. From my point of view, students just want to self-study. Although they skip lessons, they are not lazy and are willing to study hard. This phenomenon is very interesting and makes me interested in studying the reasons behind the students’ absence.

There are many studies focusing on the disadvantages of students’ absence. But, we know little about the reasons behind. So, in our research, we aim to study the reasons why students choose to skip class and study on their own. Our research questions involve the significance of attending lectures, purposes of skipping classes, like aiming at a better grade, and reasons why students think classes are unnecessary.

In order to find out the answer, we collected quantitative data from around 50 students and qualitative data from 9 students .

We found that most of the students agreed they were able to catch up the classes on their own. Although they believed lectures had positive impact on their academic performance, more than half of the students did not prefer attending lectures.

This graph shows the elements enhancing students’ academic results. Rather than attending classes, most of the students thought exercises and online materials for revision are the best ways to improve their academic performance. Exercises and online materials are also commonly used by students to do self-study.

This graph shows that half of the students preferred doing self-study while the other half preferred attending class. It shows that self-study is getting popular in university now.

For the qualitative result, I found that a lot of students thought self-study was better and flexible. They could freely choose the time to self-study. But the lecturing time is fixed and students may find it inconvenient to attend lessons. Also, it is common to see that students did not understand the content of lectures as they thought that the professors did not explain concepts clearly. Many students said they were always tired in morning lectures.

Finally, through this research, I believe that there are 3 reasons leading to students’ tendency in skipping classes. First of all, there is almost no consequence to skip classes as students can catch up the lesson by using online materials and exercises. Besides, students are usually tired in the morning and they seldom interact with professors, so they may not see the advantages of attending classes. Last but not least, the trend of self-study in university is more popular now.

This is the end of my presentation, thank you.
