Lexical Features (a)

In this section, you can see the script of a poster presentation done in the Student Research Showcase held at the City University of Hong Kong in September, 2019. Are there any lexical features specific to poster presentations? Where are they located?

In the script, identify the lexical features specific to poster presentations by:
(1) highlighting the word(s)/phrase(s)/sentence(s) pertaining to a particular lexical feature with the use of your mouse;
(2) annotating the highlighted part(s) in the box(es) that pop out.

The following guiding questions will help you do the analysis along the way:
A. How should you address the audience and yourself?
B. How can you mentally draw yourself closer to the audience?
C. How can you ensure a smooth transition between two different points?

Finally, you may check your answers by clicking the “Answer” button. The same script will pop up with all the features highlighted. You may then view the annotations of the features by moving the mouse cursor to the highlighted parts one by one.

Using sports facilities in CityU

Hello, everyone. I am Yang Hao. I have a wide range of hobbies. Exercising is one of them. I love jogging and playing basketball with my friends. I think that exercise makes me happy and releases stress. As you know, health is important to everyone, especially for university students, since doing sports can improve academic performance. So we aim to investigate the use of sports facilities in our university.

We used an online questionnaire and interview to collect data from students in our university. 30 students completed the questionnaire and 6 students were invited to attend an interview.

We have 3 important findings. First of all, the sports facilities were seldom booked in our university. This shows that students spent little time doing sports on campus. This may be because they spent most of their time on studying and indoor entertainment. Besides, students have limited understanding of sport facilities in CityU, for example, only 14.8% of the respondents knew our school had a volleyball court. It shows that the promotions of the sports facilities to students may not be enough. At the same time, the average time male students spent on exercise is twice as much as female students, although there is not much difference in the degree of understanding of sports facilities between male and female students.

Since good health is the basis for a happy life and good academic performance, we have a few suggestions for our school. First, the school should promote the sports facilities to our students, like providing regular sports courses. Furthermore, if we provide more sports facilities that female students like to use, we will increase female students’ interest in exercise. By promoting and increasing the sports facilities in our school, we can increase students’ awareness of keeping a healthy lifestyle.

Thank you.
