In this section, you can see the script of a poster presentation done in the Student Research Showcase held at the City University of Hong Kong in September, 2019. Are there any lexical features specific to poster presentations? Where are they located?
In the script, identify the lexical features specific to poster presentations by:
(1) highlighting the word(s)/phrase(s)/sentence(s) pertaining to a particular lexical feature with the use of your mouse;
(2) annotating the highlighted part(s) in the box(es) that pop out.
The following guiding questions will help you do the analysis along the way:
A. How should you address the audience and yourself directly?
B. How can you mentally draw yourself closer to the audience?
C. How can you show that an issue/a problem is existing now?
D. How can you highlight the differences between various results easily?
Finally, you may check your answers by clicking the “Answer” button. The same script will pop up with all the features highlighted. You may then view the annotations of the features by moving the mouse cursor to the highlighted parts one by one.
The accomodation of students in CityU
Hello everyone, I’m Cici. Today I’m going to talk about the accommodation of the students in our university. Many foreign students may want to study in Hong Kong nowadays . However, college students, especially the non-local ones, may encounter many obstacles in finding a place to live. Since there are limited studies focusing on the accommodation problems of university students, we conducted a research in order to analyze this topic and provide our prediction and suggestions.
We focused on three aspects, including the location of accommodation, reasons why some non-local students like living outside campus, and the advantages and disadvantages of living outside campus. We collected data by using questionnaires and interviews. 45 students completed a questionnaire about their living situations, and 9 participants attended an interview to explain why they preferred to live in student dormitory. Then, we tabulated the results. In the first bar chart, you can see that living on campus is much cheaper than living outside. The second pie chart indicates that the price of accommodation was the greatest concern of our students. The last pie chart shows non-local students’ preference to live near the campus and with more private space.
In our university, students need to participate in some returning activities in order to be qualified to live in the student residence. But, many students thought that the returning activities could not allow us to build a close relationship with other students. Moreover, some returning activities were meaningless and students thought they may waste their time. More seriously, they become a burden to students. With the above conditions, we have four suggestions for the Student Residence Office. The Office should expand the capacity of the student residence, provide subsidy for students living outside the campus, consider to run off-campus dormitories and cooperate with some hotels or agencies.
That’s all, thanks for your attention.
