Curriculum Structure

Students are required to take courses to fulfil the University's requirements, such as Gateway Education, University Language and College Requirement courses.  Students majoring in Public Policy and Politics are also required to take foundation courses in their first year of study.

The Department of Public and International Affairs is a multidisciplinary department with a multinational faculty and a strong international orientation. Our Target

The aims of the major in Public Affairs and Management (PAM) are to:

  • provide students with a comprehensive education in the common core theories, concepts, and knowledge bases of public policy, public management, and political science;
  • enable students to specialize in public policy, public management, or political science for gaining an understanding of the essential theories, principles, dynamics, and analytic approaches of these bodies of knowledge;
  • equip students with the theoretical, conceptual, and analytical tools to comprehensively understand public policy, public management, and political developments in Hong Kong, China and the contemporary global world; and
  • produce graduates who can effectively meet the human resources needs of a wide range of public and private sector employers in administrative, management, and policy and political analysis positions, as well as in the media and non-government organisations.
What You Will Be Studying

In the first year you will take a number of foundation courses essential to the basic understanding of public affairs and management - public management, political science, urban studies, and philosophy. These courses will give you a solid platform on which to build up your general knowledge of public affairs and management.

In the second year of study, you will specialize in one of the following streams:

  • Political Affairs and Governance 

  • Public Policy and Management

The Political Affairs and Governance stream will engage students in the study of wider political and governance issues, the Department can effectively broaden students’ horizons, boost their political and governance skills, and eventually improve their general employability.

The Public Policy and Management stream focuses on human resources management, financial resources management, organizational behavior in public management, management ethics, public policy ethics and housing studies.

A number of electives will also be offered to PAM students to enrich their learning in the subject discipline.

Joint Bachelor's Degree Programme

Joint Bachelor’s Degree Programme between City University of Hong Kong and Columbia University for students in Public Affairs and Management (Political Affairs and Governance Stream)

Students in the Public Affairs and Management Programme (Public Affairs and Governance stream) may apply for admission to the Joint Degree Programme. Students admitted to the Joint Degree Programme will spend their first two years at City University of Hong Kong and stay at Columbia University for their third and fourth years. Upon graduation, students will receive two degrees: Bachelor of Social Sciences in Public Affairs and Management conferred by City University of Hong Kong and Bachelor of Arts in Political Science conferred by Columbia University.

Did You Know?

The PAM major equips graduates for successful careers in a wide range of administration, management, politics and policy positions in both the public and private sectors. PAM graduates work as administrative officers and executive officers in various government departments. Some also work as administrators and managers in public organisations such as universities, public hospitals, the Housing Authority, Hospital Authority and Airport Authority. Some teach in secondary schools and some go on to work as anchors and reporters in the news media. Many of our graduates find employment in the private sector in the fields of public transport, banking, financial services and property management.

Student Exchange / Internship

The Department of Public and International Affairs sends a large number of PAM students to overseas universities in Europe, Australia, United States, Canada, and Asia for exchange study. The Department has achieved an impressive record in securing international exchange places with universities in Europe, North America and Australia. The Department also provides internship to PAM students to gain practical working experience in a wide range of both public and private organizations. This helps the career planning of PAM students. Apart from these, PIA summer schools are very popular among PAM students for spending a summer in a foreign setting. Various field trips and study tours to different places are organized by faculty in different courses to broaden the horizons of PAM students to enable them to compare and evaluate the practices of public policy and the operation of government in different countries.

As the first of its kind in Hong Kong, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering was established to develop internationally competitive and cutting-edge research and provide a professional curriculum that equips graduates to contribute to various materials related sectors in Hong Kong, for the fast-growing high-tech industries.

The Department serves as a collaboration platform for developing cross-disciplinary academic programmes and interdisciplinary research projects with other academic units in the University. BEng Materials Science and Engineering

In the Materials Science and Engineering major, students acquire knowledge that can be used to solve materials problems in engineering processes. Graduates of this major can seek jobs in engineering companies and join the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers as graduate members. They can become professional engineers after receiving the relevant on-the-job training and completing the professional assessment.

Our Target

The Materials Science and Engineering major aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to meet local and regional needs in the industrial, commercial, government and education sectors.

In particular, graduates of this major understand the production, fabrication and service performance of engineering materials, including conventional bulk materials, advanced thin film and nanostructured materials. Working with other engineering specialists, our graduates contribute to the design, manufacture, maintenance, safety enhancement and testing of engineering components, devices, structures and processing plants.

Materials Science and Engineering is an exciting and fascinating subject. Many of the novel materials invented over the past few decades significantly influence the way we live.

Materials Science and Engineering has permeated all industrial sectors. Graduates may choose to work in many different areas such as the electronics, toy, plastic, metal, ceramic and construction industries, or in testing laboratories. Graduates may also be employed as quality control engineers, production engineers, testing engineers or technical sales engineers for equipment, machinery and materials.

A materials science and engineering education predisposes students to a life enriched by the ability to understand technical information and analyse problems using scientific reasoning. In the past, materials science and engineering graduates have pursued successful careers in other diverse fields such as finance, business and education.

Industrial Training and International Exchange

The College of Engineering and the Department offer work placement opportunities through different internship schemes that provide students with full-time job attachments in firms in Hong Kong, the Pearl River Delta region and overseas. Through such placements, students will:

Why Bachelor Laws and Bachelor of Science in Computing Mathematics?

There is an increasing number of legal tasks in which a detailed knowledge of mathematics is a significant asset to lawyers. The law-math double degree programme therefore fills an important market need in the legal profession. The training provided by this double degree programme will bring additional mathematical knowledge to law students and equip them with critical skills in areas such as probability and statistics, quantitative analysis and formal logic that are becoming increasingly important in the legal world. Students will study a mix of law and mathematics courses throughout the 5 years of study, with the fifth year on self-financing.

Why Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business Administration in Accountancy?

The School of Law and the Department of Accountancy are internationally renowned for the strengths of their respective disciplines. Their work is linked with the financial and corporate sectors, which often have legal disputes that can only be solved by those with a detailed knowledge of accounting. Students in the double degree programme will acquire wide-ranging legal knowledge and skills that will enable them to progress to professional legal training, and will also acquire foundational knowledge that can assist them to qualify as accountants. The double degree will prepare students for a career in the legal and financial sectors, and they will also have the option to become a legal professional. Students will receive a well-rounded education from our staff, which includes distinguished teachers and scholars from Hong Kong, Mainland China, the UK, Australia, India, and Malaysia. In addition, students will have the opportunity to be taught by visiting faculty from law schools all around the world.

Professional Accreditation

Students who complete the Law Major and four additional specific law electives (12 credits) will satisfy the requirements stipulated by the Standing Committee on Legal Education and Training to apply for admission to the Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (PCLL).

In accordance with the professional accreditation guidelines, after commencement of the double degree programme requests for accreditation will be submitted to professional bodies, e.g., The Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA), to obtain the same professional accreditation as the Bachelor of Business Administration in Accountancy programme.

i-Marketing +

The “i” element of our programme refers to INTERACTIVE, INTERNATIONAL and INTELLIGENCE. With its discovery-enriched curriculum design, students in CityU Marketing interact and connect with world-class professors, top business leaders, experienced alumni, and executives from partner companies. They are strong in teamwork, presentation, problem solving, and communication with people of different backgrounds and cultures. As key technologies and trends will drive changes in the marketing industry, our various digital marketing courses are set to prepare students for facing the challenges of the digital marketing environment.

Global Marketing Stream

The stream aims to equip students with marketing knowledge in a global context. Students are expected to be outgoing and culture-sensitive, and prepared to be exposed to marketing strategies and institutions in various regions and countries. They have to complete a foreign language course and may have a chance to join more than one exchange program during their study period. All of these efforts ensure students are well-equipped and possess a strong foundation to succeed in the future world of work.

Marketing Analytics Stream

The stream aims to prepare students to be big data marketing experts with advanced data analysis skills. They are capable of interpreting and utilizing data to develop effective marketing strategies. Students are expected to be strong in numeric skills and statistical knowledge and be proficient in social media and digital marketing. Students may participate analytics-related internships and professional certification courses outside the program to become certified professionals in the field.  

Joint Degree Programmes with ESSEC Business School (ESSEC) and National Taiwan University (NTU)

The Department of Marketing distinctly encourages students to broaden their horizons and to actively engage in exchange and overseas internship programmes. In line with its aspirations, the Department organises joint degree programmes with top universities - ESSEC Business School and National Taiwan University (NTU) - for elite students to obtain two internationally recognised degrees within 4 years. Through the programme, students can sharpen their awareness of culture while building all-rounded competitive strengths and developing a blueprint for their future career development.

ESSEC Business School (ESSEC) is one of the top Business Schools in Europe and one of the few Business Schools well-recognised by all EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB. It was ranked top for Bachelor Degrees in France by the French magazine "Le Point: in 2022. ESSEC provides internationalised education: one-third of its students are from 98 countries and it receives over 500 inbound exchange students from around the globe every year.National University of Taiwan (NTU) is the top university in Taiwan and ranked 68th on the QS World University Ranking in 2022, being the only university ranked within the Top 100 Universities in the World. NTU is the alma mater of many eminent Taiwanese, including the Nobel Prize winner.

「i」的意思是:

「環球市場營銷」專業

旨在鼓勵學生積極面向世界,了解各地文化特色, 培養學生成為具環球視野的營銷精英,將來為企業靈活制定相關地區和國家的營銷策略。學生須修讀一門外語,並有機會參加多次海外交換生計劃,讓學生具備充分的能力和堅實的基礎,在未來職場環境中取得成功。

「營銷數據分析」專業

旨在培養學生成為大數據營銷專才,擁有極強的數據分析力,能解讀及利用數據制定具成效的營銷策略。學生具備數學和統計學的專業知識,精於社交媒體和數碼營銷,為企業從大數據中發掘商機。學生更可參加與數據分析相關的實習和專業認證課程,成為未來數據營銷領域中具認證的專才。

與法國和台灣著名學府合辦雙聯學士學位課程

學系特別鼓勵學生擴闊國際視野,多參加交換生計劃及海外實習,學系更分別與頂尖的法國高等經濟商業學院(ESSEC)和國立台灣大學 (NTU)合辦雙學位課程,讓優秀的學生在四年內獲取兩個國際性的學位,培養多元文化觸覺,打造全方位的職場競爭力,開拓自己的事業版圖。

To be considered for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements. Preference may be given to students with better English proficiency in Level 4 or above in HKDSE English Language OR IELTS overall band score of 6.5 or above. Business Leader Forum

To provide students with a more concrete and in-depth understanding of the real business environment, we regularly invite marketing professionals and business leaders from different sectors to share their unique work experiences and success stories with students.
