Research Centre and Laboratory
Several institution-level research centres and laboratories have been set up to promote synergy in environment protection and sustainability.
Hong Kong Institute for Clean Energy (HKICE)
HKICE aims at pursuing highly interdisciplinary and collaborative initiatives to drive innovative clean energy solutions for tackling challenges to global net-zero carbon emissions. Our determination and vision manifested in HKICE's plan are grounded on six pillars: energy generation, energy storage, energy-saving, energy distribution, smart city, and energy analysis and policy. HKICE will be a nexus for all the industry and government leaders, stakeholders, researchers, and academic experts to collaborate for transforming the future of clean energy, from the local to the global scales. Housing world-class faculty and state-of-the-art research laboratories and infrastructure, HKICE aspires to become the foremost leader in clean energy in Hong Kong and beyond. HKICE is a University-level Institute founded on the collective expertise of the CityU to advance the development of new energy-related technologies and foster new connections between exciting energy research areas across borders and sectors.
CLP Low Carbon Energy Education Centre
With the support of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, the Department has established the CLP Low Carbon Energy Education Centre, which gives invited/plenary speeches and public lectures, such as Environment Bureau’s Long-term Decarbonisation Strategy Public Engagement Forum, and organizes academic visits, through which the Centre introduces to the public the notions related to the harness and safe use of low carbon energy, particularly nuclear energy, in our daily life.
Research Centre for Sustainable Hong Kong (CSHK)
Established in 2017, CSHK aspires to analyse and develop solutions to meet critical sustainability issues in Hong Kong and the Region from a cross-disciplinary, cross-border and cross-sector perspective. CSHK is currently composed of 25 Members from a wide range of disciplines, including public policy, international relations, social and behavioural science, communication, law, economics and finance, accountancy, management science, civil engineering, biological engineering and environmental science. Major research themes include the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the Greater Bay Area, Healthcare and Medical Ethics (esp. COVID-19), Green Buildings, AI Governance & Ethics, Enterprise and Workplace Inclusion, and Equal Opportunities and Gender. Economic and social sustainability have been a strong focus in these themes, while earth (ecology) sustainability permeates in various areas (e.g., all three pillar of sustainability are a major concern in BRI).
State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution (SKLMP)
SKLMP has been a leader in marine research since it was founded in 2010. With over 40 cross-disciplinary researchers from eight partner universities, SKLMP is dedicated to developing multidisciplinary and innovative solutions to imminent marine pollution problems that pose a significant threat to our environment and public health.
