Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission (SALSA) Scheme

 

The Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission (SALSA) Scheme is initiated by the University Grants Committee (UGC) to offer university education opportunities to elite athletes of Hong Kong in quest of their dual career development in sports and in academics. There is no minimum academic or age entrance requirement for elite athletes under the SALSA Scheme.

 

Objectives

  • To recognize elite athletes with outstanding sports achievements.
  • To provide elite athletes with various opportunities for tertiary education at CityU.
  • To enrich the campus life of elite athletes and enhance their personal development.
  • To promote sports excellence.

 

Eligibility

The applicant must be satisfying the following criteria:

  1. A senior current elite athlete:

      i. nominated for admission by Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI); or
      ii. of a recognised National Sports Association (NSA) and has achieved Elite Vote (EV) Point 3 or above according to the EV Level of Elite Athletes.
     

    Competitions include in Elite Vote (EV) Point 3 or above (Extracted from EV Level of Elite Athletes)
    The highest level of sports achievement ever attained at senior events of the below competitions:
    Ranking 4-8 (>24 entries) or Top 1/3 (≤24 entries) Medal (>9 entries) or Top 1/3 (≤9 entries)
     Asian Championships
     National Games
     Word University Games / Championships
     Asia Cup (Finals)
     World Cup Series
     Asian Games
     World Cup (Finals)
     Olympic Games
     World Championships
      Asian Cup Series
      National Championships
      Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games

    The highest level of sports achievement ever attained by an athlete with disability at senior events of the below competitions:
    Ranking 4-8 (>24 entries) or Top 1/3 (≤24 entries) Medal (>9 entries) or Top 1/3 (≤9 entries)
     Asian Championships
     National Games
     Asia Cup (Finals)
     IPC World Cup Series
     Asian Para Games
     IPC World Cup (Finals)
     Paralympic Games
     IPC World Championships

    Non-IPC:
     World Cup (Finals)
     INAS Global Games
     World Championships
      Asian Cup Series
      National Championships
      Special Olympics
    Legend: IPC – International Paralympic Committee; INAS – International Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability

    Results of junior championships will not be considered; and

  2. The student-athlete is eligible to represent Hong Kong in competitions that are sanctioned by the respective international federation.
  3. The applicant should be able to demonstrate their aptitude and suitability for study.

Sports Scholarships

Student-athletes admitted through SALSA will be awarded an “Outstanding Student Athletes Entrance Scholarship” up to HK$100,000 annually. Besides, the needy student-athletes may also receive a “Student Residence Scholarship” of $15,900 per annum, and over 40 various Sports Scholarships offered by donors and departments of the University.
