Hong Kong Identity Card

Under the Registration of Persons Ordinance, all Hong Kong residents aged 11 or over (including those who have been permitted to stay in Hong Kong for more than 180 days) are required to register for a Hong Kong Identity Card (HKID Card), except those who are exempted or excluded.  HKID Cards are issued in the form of smart cards, each embedded with an integrated circuit or “chip” that stores and processes data.  Other than using the HKID Card for immigration purpose, holders can also use the card for non-immigration purpose such as using it as an e-certificate or a library card.
