IMMC 2024 in Greater China: Innovative Mathematical Contest Hosted by College of Science

The College of Science (CSCI) hosted The International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (IMMC) 2024 – The 10th Annual International Mathematical Challenge Regional and International Final Presentation Competition of Greater China on 26 and 27 April 2024. The event showcased the academic prowess and innovative ideas of talented secondary school students across the region.

The competition united finalists from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, who had successfully advanced through rigorous selection rounds to reach this stage. Participants shared their learning experiences and discoveries with a distinguished panel of judges, competing for recognition and recommendation to the International Expert Panel.

St. Paul’s Co-educational College and Diocesan Girls’ School received Outstanding Awards in the Regional Round, while La Salle College, Diocesan Girls’ School and Pui Kiu College, were recognised with Outstanding Awards in the International Round.

In the opening speech, Prof. Ray Cheung, Associate Provost (Digital Learning) of the Office of the Provost and Deputy President of CityUHK, emphasised the significance of nurturing talent in the region. This remarkable event transcended mere academic exercise, evolving into an innovative mathematical challenge that brought together secondary students from diverse regions to apply mathematical principles in addressing real-world problems amidst the global trend of innovation and technology.

The competition not only provided a platform for students to showcase their mathematical skills but also encouraged cross-cultural exchange and networking opportunities. In addition to the presentation competition, participants also attended a workshop at CityUHK and had the opportunity to visit the CityUHK Campus and the State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution.

Students from Hong Kong have demonstrated exceptional performance in the IMMC 2024. Congratulations to all the schools for their remarkable success.
