- To promote mentoring relationships between professionals, CityUHK alumni and students of the College of Science.
- To enhance students’ educational, social and personal growth through learning from the experience of mentors.
- To enrich students’ social networking, interpersonal skills and career development.
- To encourage multi-disciplinary learning by providing a platform for communication and experience sharing between experienced mentors from the different fields.
- To maintain a close link between the College of Science, its alumni and friends.
A fruitful mentorship experience requires mutual effort and understanding from both the mentor and mentee. Mentors and mentees are at liberty to arrange and prepare for other mentoring sessions as this will allow mentors and mentees the flexibility to cater for their specific needs. Mentees are expected to take the initiative during the mentoring process as well as the responsibility for managing the mentoring relationship.
It is up to the individual mentor and mentee to arrange the frequency and format of their interactions but in general, it is expected that mentors and mentees shall meet in person at least TWICE per academic year supplemented by a steady stream of communication through emails, WhatsApp and WeChat etc. The Colleges may arrange gathering for the programme from time to time.
Role of mentors
- Meet regularly with the mentee(s) – preferably once per semester;
- Give advice, suggestions and guidance to the mentee(s) about their career planning and advancement in future;
- Help mentee(s) understand real life experience in the workplace and integrate their academic learning with practices in the field;
- Help mentees enhance their self-esteem, confidence, professional commitment and communication skills.
Role of mentees
- Assume equal responsibility for ongoing contact;
- Schedule meeting dates and keep commitments;
- Prepare a list of discussion items before meeting with the mentor and follow up on your mentor’s suggestions;
- Let your mentor know how his/her advice and feedback has contributed to your career goalsetting and achievements;
- “Check in” periodically with the mentor to let him/her know how you are benefiting from the programme or if you are facing any issues;
- Submit an annual report to his/her mentor for review, and then submit the duly reviewed report to College of Science for record.
Report format:
Please send the annual report to csci.office@cityu.edu.hk by 30 June each year. |
