Why BEng Aerospace Engineering?

Since the last century, aerospace has been undergoing rapid changes, which were driven by the advancement in electric aircraft flight technologies, advanced digital communications (what is now being called digital aerospace), smart inspection, autonomous flight, supersonic flight technologies, etc. Our program takes cognizance of these changes but at the same time provides the students with the engineering skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the current climate and to adapt to the forthcoming changes.

Given the vision of aerospace, space, and aviation to 2040, it is clear that influential trends such as electric aircraft, technological innovations, climate change, space urbanization, changing consumer demands, autonomous vehicles, etc. are all capable of creating new industries and supply chain providers in addition to the demand that will be placed on existing industries.

Entrance Requirements for Direct/Non-JUPAS Applicants

Our Target

Aerospace has been undergoing rapid changes since the last century. Such changes have been driven by the advancement in electric aircraft flight technologies, advanced digital communications (what is now called digital aerospace), smart inspection, autonomous flight, supersonic flight technologies, etc. Our major takes cognizance of these changes but at the same time provides the students with the engineering skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the current climate and to adapt to the forthcoming challenges.

This major, aerospace engineering aims to provide students with a significantly broad base of engineering skills. They will meet the needs of the current and the changing aerospace industry, e.g. New Space (SpaceX), space flight and the next generation aircraft. Moreover, the multidisciplinary education also enhances graduate employment in areas such as technical services, consultancy, manufacturing and finance, which is aligned with the manpower need in Hong Kong.

Start Your Career Here

The new major benefits from having a two-stream system. Students can specialize in either the Materials or the Aerospace Systems stream in the senior years of the major. This offers employment opportunities in areas that will form the backbone of aerospace technologies of the future. In an Aviation Forum regarding Global Megatrends held at the Royal Aeronautical Society (2019) and attended by delegates from around the world, it was clear that there will be a demand at local, national and global levels for training undergraduates in the fields of advanced materials, systems technologies, conceptual systems design, communication systems, space technologies/exploration, electrical technologies. The proposed new major covers these aspects in addition to the fundamentals of computing, simulation, numerical methods and professional engineering which opens additional career opportunities in R&D, technical services, finance, teaching/research and consultancy.

It is expected that some graduates will continue with postgraduate studies to specialize in some of the next generation fields of developing areas e.g. space urbanization, digital communications and AI, autonomous vehicles, robotics, materials for hypersonic flight, etc. Undoubtedly, career paths for these are already open and more are sure to develop.

What You Will Be Studying

The young professionals educated in this major will meet the needs of Hong Kong as an international financial center and aviation hub as well as the demands for development in innovation and technology, testing and certification. In addition, the major is developed upon the research strengths across a number of excellent departments, such as MNE, Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) and Department of Advanced Design and Systems Engineering at CityU. The major will offer professional teaching and conduct cutting-edge research in aerospace materials and manufacturing systems, aerospace statics and dynamics, electric and electronic systems for aircraft, aircraft system design and performance, flight mechanics, aircraft design and communication systems, testing, certification, safety and reliability, manufacturing and robotic technologies, aerospace structures and materials, advanced structural materials, flight control systems engineering, avionic power systems, noise and vibration control, machine learning and artificial intelligence, aeroelasticity, NDT Technologies for aircraft structures and materials.

Industrial Training and International Exchange

The College of Engineering and the Department offer work placement opportunities through various internship schemes that provide students with full-time job attachments in firms not only in Hong Kong, but also in the Pearl River Delta region and overseas. Through such placements, students will:

  • gain solid experience in a real-world work environment;
  • develop problem-solving abilities and interpersonal skills;
  • learn the right attitudes towards work and professionalism; and
  • broaden their experience and enhance their employability.

For details, please visit the College's Co-operative Education Centre's website.

Furthermore, for students to broaden their educational horizons, gain language experience and enhance their awareness of different cultures, the Department, College and University offer a number of credit-bearing exchange programmes with various partner institutions around the world including universities in Australia, Canada, Europe, the US and the Asia-Pacific region.

Please visit CityUHK's website and the Department's website for details of outbound exchange programmes.

Professional Recognition

This major has been granted full accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), a signatory member of the Washington Accord under which all members agree to recognise each other's accredited Engineering degree programmes.
