Introduction
University of Science and Technology, China (USTC)-City University of Hong Kong (CityU) Joint Advanced Research Center is located at Suzhou Dushu Lake Science and Education Innovation District of the Suzhou Industrial Park. Suzhou Industrial Park is the largest economic and technological cooperation between the Chinese and Singapore governments. Situated in the south of the Suzhou Industrial Park, Suzhou Dushu Lake Science and Education Innovation District is an important infrastructure where the Suzhou government makes significant investment to develop higher education, cultivate talents for the hi-tech industry and build up a city of international competitiveness.
On 13 June 2004, USTC and CityU signed an agreement to set up the USTC-CityU Joint Advanced Research Center with an aim to carry out frontier research and jointly recruit and educate high quality research students.
Both USTC and CityU are world-renowned universities. The two universities have developed a close working relationship since 1990s.
A number of inter-university as well as inter-faculty academic exchange activities were organized during the last thirty years. The establishment of USTC-CityU Joint Advanced Research Center signifies a tighter connection between USTC and CityU and further strengthens the collaboration between the two universities.
Since its inception, the USTC-CityU Joint Advanced Research Center has been making good use of the regional advantage of Suzhou and its enormous economic growth to develop the innovative research areas that the two universities have common interest in. At present, more than seven projects, namely applied mathematics, control and mechatronics, web services, business and management, environmental science, fire safety and nanomechanics, computational and theoretical materials physics, etc., have been carried out to put the conceptual ideas into practical use, which also serve as a platform to nurture research students.
With the rise of China, the USTC-CityU Joint Advanced Research Center will keep on striving for strengthening its competitive edge at the Yangtze River Delta. By strengthening cooperation for mutual benefit, the Research Center is determined to provide quality education, and continue its mission to develop a large pool of talents that is vital to the advancement of China.

中国科学技术大学-香港城市大学联合高等研究中心(苏州)坐落于苏州工业园区独墅湖科教创新区。苏州工业园区是中国和新加坡两国政府的重大合作项目,以高新技术为先导。而独墅湖科教创新区位于工业园区南部,是苏州市发展高等教育,大力培养创新人才和增强城市综合竞争力的重要建设项目。
2004年6月13日,中国科学技术大学与香港城市大学签署协议,决定成立中国科学技术大学-香港城市大学联合高等研究中心(苏州),重点进行两校前沿性研究和联合培养研究生。
中国科学技术大学与香港城市大学都是国际认可的高质素、高水平大学。两校自1994年以来已经有了三十年的友好合作。在各个层面展开了学术交流活动,也签订了多项校际和院系际的合作协议,合作根基相当稳固。联合高等研究中心的成立,标志着两校之间的合作进入了一个更深的层次。
联合高等研究中心凭借苏州良好的区位优势和开展高新技术研发所具有的强大经济背景,发挥各自优势,发展两校共同感兴趣的创新研究领域。目前,已开展超过七个项目的合作,即应用数学、控制与机电一体化、互联网服务、商学与管理、环境科学、火灾安全与纳米力学、理论材料物理等,将概念性想法付诸实践,提供培养博士研究生的平台。
联合高等研究中心的成立,为两校在长三角的发展提供了契机。两校将以此为平台,进一步扩大合作的范围和领域。双方本着平等互惠、优势互补及共同发展的原则,为社会和地方输送高素质的研究成果和人才。在这个基地上,双方将携手合作,为国家的科技发展和地方经济建设做出贡献。
