In collaboration with Tseung Kwan O Government Secondary School (TKOGSS), 10 students from the College of Science served as ‘student teachers’ and gained hands-on teaching experience in a real classroom setting on 12 October 2022.
Our students were responsible for teaching a science module to secondary two students from TKOGSS. Student teachers formed into small groups and went through the entire process of teaching: curriculum design, teaching, and assessment. Each group taught a class size of around 30 students and they all enjoyed the fruitful exchanges with secondary students. By the end of the class, while our science students became more confident as effective teachers, they also gained the satisfaction in nurturing secondary school students’ passion in STEM education.
It was a unique and rewarding experience for students from both CityU and TKOGSS. Professor Daniel Ho, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Education) said, “We saw wonderful interaction between the secondary school students and student teachers. It was a great opportunity for those who wanted to develop a career in teaching”.
Reciprocal visit will be arranged for TKOGSS students in December where they will be able to explore the campus and get a glimpse of student life at CityU.
