City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) is celebrating its 30th Anniversary with a series of activities that bring together faculty, students and alumni for joyful celebrations. Some of these activities extend into the community to foster a sense of togetherness and share the University’s development milestones. The CityUHK 30th Anniversary Short Film Competition welcomes participation from secondary school students in Hong Kong and other Greater Bay Area cities to deepen their understanding of the University and promote creativity, collaboration and innovation.
On 3 July, CityUHK arranged a visit for approximately 70 secondary school students. They explored various facilities, including the State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves, the Department of Media and Communication, the School of Creative Media, and the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences’ Clinical Skills Laboratory. The aim of the campus tour was to inspire their creative ideas by deepening their understanding of CityUHK and to foster their desire for higher education development in Hong Kong.
St. Teresa Secondary School student Candy Bao Jing-ying was deeply impressed by Gallery 360, a multimedia audiovisual facility in the School of Creative Media, as the exhibits of the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang and “CITY IN TIME” were exceptionally authentic. Another St. Teresa student, Freya Bao Yufei, found their first visit to the broadcasting studio and news equipment fascinating.
Professor Jiang Li, from the Department of Media and Communication, introduced the competition to the students before the campus tour. She encouraged them to seek inspiration from various sources to tell a compelling and impactful story. Ms Natalie Au, a graduate from the Department of Media and Communication, shared her filming experience and fundamental filming techniques with the students. She also discussed her university journey, encouraging them to never give up pursuing their dreams.
The theme of the competition, "Bridges to Innovation and Stories of Connection", invites participants to explore and express the many ways in which creativity and/or connectivity play a role in education and personal growth and to demonstrate inventive thinking and the building of relationships within and beyond the CityUHK community. The competition is divided into two categories: the CityUHK Group and Secondary Student Group. Each category offers a range of awards and prizes to encourage the teams. Registration is now open; the submission deadline for entries is 31 August 2024.
