Why BEng Environmental Science and Engineering?

Environmental engineering is concerned with the solution of environmental problems. Examples include:

  • Air pollution
  • Marine pollution
  • Water treatment
  • Waste and recycling
  • Sustainability

Nowadays environmental engineering is becoming increasingly important. With the challenges posed by urbanisation and climate change, environmental engineers are needed to safeguard human health, protect the environment and help build a sustainable society. Environmental engineering is an exciting and rewarding career for young people who want to use their technical skills to improve society.

Environmental engineering is extremely diverse and attracts people with different interests and talents.  Specific problems may require specialised knowledge of biology, chemical engineering or mechanical engineering. Environmental engineers may work in the field, laboratory or office.

Entrance Requirements for Direct/Non-JUPAS Applicants

Entrance Requirements for Direct/Non-JUPAS Applicants

To be considered for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements and the following major-specific entrance requirements:

  • Good grades in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at a high school or post-secondary institution

Curriculum Structure

For details of the programme's curriculum structure, please visit the 'Undergraduate Catalogue'.

What You Will Be Studying

The EVE major aims to provide professional education to train students to be knowledgeable in environmental science and engineering so that they can work as environmental professionals contributing to improved environmental performance and sustainability. The programme objectives are:

  • to provide students with broad-based knowledge and fundamentals of environmental science and engineering with three streams, namely environmental technology, sustainability and environmental management, and environmental science;

  • to produce graduates who can perform competently as environmental professionals, scientists and engineers in commercial, industrial and non-governmental organisations, civil services and educational institutions;

  • to produce graduates that are aware of global, societal, ethical and professional issues and responsibilities in the practice of environmental science and engineering and make contributions to the betterment of the society; and

  • to nurture students’ ability to engage in life-long learning and professional development.

To prepare students for their future careers, the EVE major comprises courses in science, engineering, and environmental applications. Students will study air pollution, wastewater treatment and water resources, among other topics, as well as experimental and computational techniques. Since environmental problems cannot be considered in isolation, students will also be trained in sustainability, environmental management and environmental impact assessment.

Start Your Career Here

Since Hong Kong is a small but densely populated place with an advanced economy, we are facing many pressing environmental challenges. Our EVE graduates are now pursuing careers in monitoring or mitigating environmental pollution for government departments, developing new technologies for engineering firms, and advising companies on sustainable practices. They enjoy a wide range of career opportunities in various units such as government departments, NGOs, secondary schools and private companies:

  • Energy engineers in the following types of companies: utility (electricity and gas), energy services, environmental consulting, environmental engineering, transport (mass transit, buses, ferries, ocean-going vessels, airlines, aircraft services), government departments, etc.

  • Environmental/sustainability engineers  in corporations, property management companies, real-estate developers, and construction, manufacturing and transportation industries, etc.

  • Professionals in companies/institutes involved in researching, developing, manufacturing and/or selling products related to energy generation, storage, efficiency and conservation, and environmental technology to prevent, control, treat and remediate environmental pollution

  • Financial analysts and investors in financial institutions with business in energy and environmental investments and/or loans

  • Consultants in non-government organisations with activities related to energy and the environment

  • Secondary school teachers responsible for science curriculum

Some of our graduates also pursue advanced degrees in related areas.

Professional Recognition

Our undergraduate programme, Bachelor of Engineering in Environmental Science and Engineering (EVE), is accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).  The EVE programme meets the academic requirement for HKIE Corporate Membership in the environmental discipline.  Additionally, our EVE students may choose to enrol in optional electives if they are interested in being a HKIE member in the Building Services (BSS) discipline.

The HKIE has agreements for reciprocal recognition of professional qualifications with engineering authorities in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the Mainland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and agreements of co-operation with other organisations in Europe, the Mainland, North America and Southeast Asia.
