The team co-led by Prof. Steven Wang City won the Research Project of the Year: STEM at Times Higher Education (THE) Awards Asia 2024.
Competing with seven other nominees from other prestigious universities in Asia in this category, the research aims to help solve the twin crises of freshwater and electricity production shortages.
THE Awards Asia 2024, held on 29 April in Malaysia, gave out 10 awards during the evening. The awards offer an international platform to acknowledge outstanding leadership and institutional performance and celebrate higher-education excellence in Asia.

Professor Jason Lam Chun-ho of the School of Energy and Environment won the TEA for 2023/24.
He developed a series of innovative virtual reality (VR) experiences to deepen students' understanding of the climate change. By simply using a mobile phone and VR device, students can embark on captivating ‘digital field trips’ to various locations, immersing themselves in the devastating impacts of extreme weather worldwide and venturing into the depths of the ocean to witness coral bleaching.

Researchers from HKICE received 10 awards, including 5 Gold Medals with Congratulations of the Jury, 3 Gold Medals, and 2 Silver Medal at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva (IEIG) held from 17 to 21 April in Switzerland.
IEIG, an annual event dedicated to inventions, provides a unique opportunity for inventors and researchers to present the results of their research and their new products.

Prof. Jinlian HU for being elected Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) for her highly innovative work in advancing shape-memory polymers and textiles.

Prof. FENG's team invented a Direct Thermal Charging Cell (DTCC) for efficiently converting low-grade heat to electricity. DTCCs have uniqueness and advantages for practical application including a wide operation window, isothermal and continuous charging/discharging operation, low-cost, bendable, simple system, and the ability to form stacks of cells. It may be the key to unlocking the potential of heat-to-electricity conversion. By establishing startup and collaborating with industries, the invention is moving from academic research toward real products in various applications.

Prof. Zuankai Wang is one of nine recipients to win the 2021 Green Tech Award organized by the Meituan Green Tech Fund for his innovative multidisciplinary research on low carbon cooling and nature-inspired engineering. The related research will have a profound impact on addressing the global carbon emission problem. This is another million-dollar prestigious award received by Professor Wang since he won the Xplorer Prize in 2020.

Dr. Cheng Wang has been have been shortlisted for MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 (TR35) China for his achievement in inventing a unique thin-film LiNbO3 platform and its supporting micro-nano processing techniques, realizing high-performance, small-size, low-cost, and low-power optical interconnection solutions.
Recognizing the rise of Chinese technology talent, MIT Technology Review gives these young people a platform to present themselves and their achievements to industry leaders, academic experts, and the global public in diverse technical fields including biotechnology and medicine, computer and electronics hardware, software, internet, artificial intelligence, robotics, telecommunications, nanotechnology and materials, energy, and transportation.
