Freshmen Warmly Welcomed at College Orientation 2024

Around 60 College of Science (CSCI) freshmen kicked off their university life at the College Orientation held on 27 August at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK). They were warmly welcomed.

In his welcoming speech, Professor Xin Wang, Dean of CSCI, described that CSCI students will have countless opportunities to explore in their chosen fields of science. He reminded students that our faculty and staff are always there to support them, providing guidance, encouragement, and a listening ear whenever needed. “Please know that you are never alone in your academic pursuits,” Professor Wang emphasised.

Apart from concentrating on academic studies, Professor Wang encouraged freshmen to get involved in various exchange programmes, internships, study tours, mentorship programmes and competitions to broaden their horizons. He stressed that “success goes beyond grades”, “your resilience and determination will be key to your achievements”.

At the College Orientation, Professor Daniel Ho, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Education), Professor Alex Wong, Associate Dean (Outreach and Internationalisation), Professor Andy Siu, Director of Flagship Programme, Global Research Enrichment and Technopreneurship programme (GREAT), as well as Professor Jon Lo, College Student Affairs Coordinator, shared with students many useful tips on where they can get academic and financial support in creating a fruitful undergraduate journey. They also introduced the numerous local and overseas opportunities CSCI and the University provided.

This year onwards, to recognise outstanding academic performance and encourage continuous improvements in undergraduate studies, the College introduced Academic Excellence Awards to reward Years 1 to 3 students enrolled in the Bachelor’s degree programmes. Professor Wang presented the certificates and coupons to the awardees. Congratulations!

The College of Science established the Student Chapter in 2021 to strengthen the sense of belonging of undergraduate students with the College. Ivan Cheung Yuk Yuen, Mohammad Shaarib Ahamed and Ata Ul Haleem Damanik, the President, Vice-President and Treasurer of the College Student Chapter 2023-24, took the opportunity to introduce the Student Chapter, the activities they held and invited fellow students to join. The Dean presented certificates to them, as a recognition to their outstanding work and commitment to the Student Chapter.

The College of Science wishes all students a fruitful university journey ahead.
