State-of-the-art research into the study of the medium-range structure of metallic glass developed at CityU have been honoured with Second Class Award in the Natural Science category at the Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards (Science and Technology) 2022 from the Ministry of Education.

The award-winning research project, "Study of Medium-Range Structural Evolution and the Phase Transformation in Metallic Glass", was completed through the collaboration of Professor Wang Xun-Li, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study and Chair Professor in the Department of Physics at CityU, Professor Lan Si from Nanjing University of Science and Technology and Dr Wu Zhenduo from CityU (Dongguan).

Understanding the structure of amorphous materials is a longstanding challenge in science. By investigating the medium-range structures and phase transition mechanisms of amorphous alloys, Professor Wang’s team revealed how they are related to each other. The findings of this research shed light on the factors that influence the glass-forming ability and the characteristics of amorphous structures.

The team’s scientific achievements received recognition from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, which featured them on its website’s front page in mid-2017, as well as extensive coverage from Xinhua News Agency and various academic media outlets in China and overseas. The research also earned praise from eminent experts in the field.

The Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards (Science and Technology) set up by the Ministry of Education, known as the "高等學校科學研究優秀成果獎 (科學技術)" in Chinese, are presented to individuals and units of higher education institutions for their outstanding contributions in the areas of scientific discovery, technological invention, the promotion of scientific and technological advancement, and the implementation of patented technologies.
