Dr. Brett MacKinnon is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health at City University of Hong Kong. She holds a BSc in Biology from the University of New Brunswick, Canada, as well as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and MSc in Veterinary Epidemiology from the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM).

Dr. MacKinnon joined City University of Hong Kong in November 2020 as a Visiting Fellow (Project Manager) before becoming a Scientific Officer in August 2021. Prior to this, she served as an aquatic animal health veterinarian at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and later as a veterinary epidemiologist in the agency’s Animal Health Risk Assessment Unit. Since 2018, she has been an international consultant for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), including a role as an aquaculture biosecurity specialist at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, in 2020.

Dr. MacKinnon’s research focuses on advancing global food security, particularly within the aquaculture sector. She is passionate about developing innovative and sustainable strategies to reduce the disease burden in aquatic food animals. Her work aims to improve aquatic animal health and welfare, while simultaneously enhancing the production, safety, and quality of seafood for global communities.
