Research Themes
⇲ One Health and Infectious Diseases
Promote collaborations to develop research programs to investigate host-pathogen interactions, antibiotic resistance, virulence of viruses and bacteria, and epidemiology of infectious pathogens in animals, as well as at the animal-human interface through the Applied Research Centre of One Health Research and Policy Advice and through the Centre for Animal Health and Welfare).
⇲ Production Animal Health and Companion Animal Health
The epidemiology of health and welfare of dogs and cats will continue to be investigated through use of data from Veterinary practices in Hong Kong and from CityU’s Veterinary Medical Centre and Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Through collaboration with the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) ongoing research will be conducted into race horse health and welfare.

⇲ Wildlife biology, ecology and conservation
We are currently conducting research on a diverse range of terrestrial and marine species in Hong Kong and internationally (e.g. sharks and rays, sea turtles, cetaceans, feral cattle, feral water buffalo). The work uses state-of-the-art multidisciplinary approaches, and combines aspects of anatomy, behaviour, biomechanics, diagnostic imaging, ecology and conservation, with data on health and welfare. Interactions between animals and human populations are a key focus, and form part of the college’s One Health mission. Thus, the overall aims of our research will assist with improving animal, human and environmental health.
⇲ Bioinformatics, Omics, and Data Science
Leveraging and integrating cutting-edge algorithms and strategies in bioinformatics, multi-omics, and data science to decode the intricacies of biological processes/dynamics in complex genetic systems, with an emphasis on health-related microbiology and environmental studies. We are dedicated to developing advanced biostatistical and AI models, software, and innovative solutions to address pressing challenges in precision medicine, as well as human and animal health.
