CityUHK rises into Asia’s Top 10 in the Asia University Rankings, cracks Asia’s Top 1% and is ranked third in Hong Kong

 

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) has made significant strides in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asia University Rankings 2025. Among 984 universities, CityUHK was ranked 10th in Asia, a leap of seven places from last year, and was ranked third in Hong Kong. CityUHK was among Asia’s Top 1% universities in the rankings, underscoring Hong Kong as one of the best cities for studying abroad. This contributes to positioning Hong Kong as an international hub for post-secondary education and building the “Study in Hong Kong” brand. The University excelled in several indicators, including ranking first in Asia in three sub-categories under “Global Engagement”, with outstanding performance in “Learning Experience” and “Research and Discovery”. These achievements underscore CityUHK's commitment to promoting international education, innovative academic and scientific research. 

CityUHK topped Asia in three sub-categories under “Global Engagement”: “Proportion of international faculty”, “Proportion of inbound exchange students” and “Proportion of outbound exchange students”. The University also achieved a perfect score in the “Proportion of international students” sub-category. Additionally, CityUHK performed exceptionally well in “Academic reputation”, “Citations per paper” and “Papers per faculty”.

This contributes to building the ‘Study in Hong Kong’ brand and positioning Hong Kong as an international hub for post-secondary education.”

On its 30th anniversary of becoming a university, CityUHK established the Academy of Innovation, the Institute of Digital Medicine, the College of Computing and the Hong Kong Institute of AI for Science. These achievements further promote the transformation of research outcomes into practical applications, thus having a positive impact on society and innovating into the future, he added. 

CityUHK is committed to creating an international and diverse academic environment, providing opportunities for faculty and students from different countries and regions to explore the world. CityUHK has been actively expanding its global footprint, establishing connections with top universities worldwide, including those from the Mainland and Belt and Road countries, to foster collaboration in academics and research. Among these partnerships, CityUHK signed seven cooperation agreements with various schools and departments at the University of Cambridge this year. Recently, CityUHK announced the launch of a scholarship programme with Lucy Cavendish College at the University of Cambridge, and the exciting news of CityUHK becoming the first international partner for the Future Global Leaders Programme launched by Lucy Cavendish College in the 2025/26 academic year. Currently, CityUHK has more than 400 exchange programme partners across over 44 countries or regions. About 65% of the University’s undergraduate students participate in these programmes.

CityUHK scholars are dedicated to creating innovative solutions to pressing global issues through pioneering research, earning widespread recognition for their outstanding academic achievements. Nearly 210 CityUHK scholars have been listed among the “World’s Top 2% Most-cited Scientists”, making CityUHK first in Hong Kong in the proportion of top scientists relative to the total number of faculty. Additionally, 28 scholars were named Highly Cited Researchers for 2023 by Clarivate. Again, CityUHK was ranked first in Hong Kong based on the ratio of Highly Cited Researchers to faculty size. Furthermore, 32 outstanding scholars received funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China for 2024, and CityUHK topped local institutions for the 8th consecutive year in the prestigious Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted US Utility Patents. 

To attract top global scholars, CityUHK launched the Distinguished Visiting Professors Scheme in 2023 and has so far invited around 50 renowned scholars from prestigious institutions to visit CityUHK to collaborate with faculty and students to advance interdisciplinary scientific and academic research, further expanding CityUHK's academic research network and global academic talent pool.
