Energising academic, research collaborations with CityUHK–Sungkyunkwan MoU

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) and Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) in South Korea have set up a dynamic collaboration with a newly signed MoU that’s poised to unlock new frontiers in research, education, and cultural exchange.
The MoU signed on SKKU’s historic campus on 7 April by Professor Lee Chun-sing, Provost and Deputy President of CityUHK, and Professor Yoo Ji-beom, President of SKKU, marks the beginning of an exciting chapter for both institutions.
Attending the signing ceremony were SKKU senior management and members of the CityUHK delegation: Professor Anderson Shum Ho-cheung, Vice-President (Research); Professor Patrick Butaye, Associate Dean (Research) of the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences; Professor Edwin Tso Chi-yan, Associate Dean (Internationalisation and Outreach) of the School of Energy and Environment; Professor Zhang Hua, Herman Hu Chair Professor of Nanomaterials; and Professor Shirley Chong, Director of Communications and Institutional Research Office.
The freshly inked MoU emphasises academic, educational, and cultural exchange, with plans to explore opportunities for faculty, staff and student exchange; facilitate joint research projects; and amplify discussions on academic publications and information sharing.
"CityUHK's dynamic innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem, combined with SKKU's esteemed academic excellence, will undoubtedly empower future leaders on the global stage. Together, our joint efforts will create a positive impact not only in Hong Kong and South Korea but also across the world,” said Professor Lee.

Building on an already robust relationship between CityUHK and SKKU, the MoU follows an engaging research workshop organised by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at CityUHK and the Department of Energy Science at SKKU in February 2025. Additionally, the recently established partnership in March between CityUHK’s Institute of Digital Medicine and the Samsung Advanced Institute for Health Sciences & Technology aims to advance health technology innovation.

During this visit, the CityUHK delegation toured the Natural Science Campus in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, located just outside Seoul. The tour of the Cooperative Center for Research Facilities, the Center for 2D Quantum Heterostructures, and the Center for Neuroscience Imaging Research offered keen insights into cutting-edge South Korean research.

Representatives from both universities also exchanged views on academic and research topics at a mini-workshop on 8 April. CityUHK was represented by Professor Butaye, Professor Tso, and Professor Zhang. SKKU was represented by Professor Shin Hyeon-suk, Director of the Center for 2D Quantum Heterostructures; Professor Kim Kyeong-kyu, Director of the Biomedical Institute for Convergence; and Professor Baik Seung-hyun, Director of the Center for Nanotubes and Nanostructured Composites.
