Ministry of Education approves the official establishment of City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan)
City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) is delighted to announce that the Ministry of Education has officially approved the establishment of City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan), hereinafter referred to as “CityUHK (Dongguan)”, on 16 April. This significant milestone marks a new chapter in higher education cooperation within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and further solidifies CityUHK’s leading position in innovative education and talent development.
Mr Lester Garson Huang, Chairman of the CityUHK Council, expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Education, the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education, and the Dongguan Municipal People’s Government for their unwavering support for CityUHK (Dongguan). He stated, “CityUHK (Dongguan) is strategically located in the Songshan Lake High-Tech Industrial Development Zone (Science City), a state-level, comprehensive high-tech industrial development zone. CityUHK (Dongguan) is poised to become a pivotal hub for industry-academia-research collaboration.”
Professor Freddy Boey, President of CityUHK, affirmed that “CityUHK (Dongguan) will uphold CityUHK’s educational philosophy, fostering an educational environment that is inspiring, interactive, and innovative under the principle of ‘two schools, one quality’, with the aim of nurturing innovative talents.”
In early 2020, the Dongguan Municipal People’s Government, CityUHK, and Dongguan University of Technology signed an agreement to jointly establish CityUHK (Dongguan). CityUHK (Dongguan) is nestled in the Songshan Lake Science City, surrounded by a plethora of large scientific facilities, Guangdong Provincial Laboratories, leading technology companies, and other high-end innovative resources.
The establishment of CityUHK (Dongguan) will inject fresh vitality into the construction of a high-level international talent hub in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, elevate the standard of higher education development in Dongguan, and contribute to the leading strategy of the comprehensive national science centre in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Earlier this year in January, CityUHK was honoured as the Most International University in the World 2024 by Times Higher Education. As one of the top 100 globally renowned higher education institutions, CityUHK is committed to research and professional education, striving to find solutions for global issues. CityUHK (Dongguan) will concentrate on fields such as computer science, artificial intelligence and data science, high-end electronic communications, biomedical engineering, intelligent manufacturing, advanced materials, new energy, civil and architectural engineering, and digital economy, with the ambition of becoming a world-class institution in research, education, and innovation.
CityUHK (Dongguan) will initially offer four undergraduate programmes in computer science and technology, intelligent manufacturing engineering, materials science and engineering, and energy and power engineering, along with ten master’s programmes in computer science, electronic information engineering, materials engineering and nanotechnology, mechanical engineering, energy and environment, business information systems, civil and architectural engineering, engineering management, biomedical engineering, and data science. The academic year is set to commence in September this year.
The CityUHK (Dongguan) campus is located in Songshan Lake Science City. The first phase of the campus construction began in early 2022 and was inaugurated earlier this year. The first phase of the campus includes administrative buildings, academic buildings, student dormitories, international exchange centres, comprehensive buildings, and other living facilities. The second phase of the campus construction is projected to be completed by 2026.
