CityUHK congratulates alumnus Nick Cheuk for winning Best New Director at Hong Kong Film Awards

 

Mr Nick Cheuk Yick-him, an alumnus of the School of Creative Media of City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), won the Best New Director award at the 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards for his film Time Still Turns The Pages. This is a further honour for Mr Cheuk for the same feature film, as he won the Best New Director Award and the Audience Choice Award at the 60th Golden Horse Awards in 2023, the Best New Director awards at the 17th Asian Film Awards and the Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild Awards (2023) respectively last month.

Mr Cheuk said that the award was encouraging, and he sincerely thanked the film production crew and the cast for their contributions. He also thanked the School of Creative Media for nurturing and inspiring him to pursue a career in film.

Professor Freddy Boey, President of CityUHK, congratulated Mr Cheuk for receiving the accolade and said he was immensely proud of Mr Cheuk’s achievements. He said that CityUHK is committed to nurturing talent in various fields and encouraging students to break boundaries and unleash their creativity through innovative education.

Time Still Turns The Pages, the first feature film of Mr Cheuk, revolves around a teacher who stumbles upon an anonymous suicide note in his classroom. To prevent a potential tragedy, he embarks on a quest to identify the student, resulting in a journey that stirs up his own childhood memories.

Mr Cheuk graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Media, majoring in Cinematic Arts. He hosted a director-sharing session for Time Still Turns The Pages at his alma mater in December last year and will soon direct a film for CityUHK to celebrate the university's 30th anniversary.
