CityU awards long-serving staff for their dedication to the University
A Long Service Award Ceremony was held at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 24 November to honour and appreciate about 270 dedicated long-serving staff for their commitment to the University.
The event was attended by Professor Freddy Boey, President of CityU; Professor Lee Chun-sing, Provost and Deputy President; Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, Senior Vice-President (Innovation and Enterprise); Professor Li Wen Jung, Vice-President (Talent and International Strategy); Mr Sunny Lee Wai-kwong, Vice-President (Administration); and Professor Cheng Shuk Han, Associate Vice-President (Research).
In his opening address, President Boey congratulated the awardees and expressed his heartfelt gratitude for their contribution and growth together with CityU over the years. He also extended his sincere wish to the staff members for a happy life.
At the ceremony, Professor Chan Wing-shing, from the Department of Electrical Engineering, and Ms Rebecca Lai, from Student Development Services, both of whom have worked at CityU for more than 35 years, shared their profound joy in teaching students and their work experience at CityU.
Professor Chan returned to Hong Kong from the UK to join CityU in 1988, where his research and teaching focused on radio frequency technologies. The University’s rapid advancement throughout the years encouraged him to continuously develop his academic knowledge and enhance his teaching strategies, prioritising understanding each student’s individual challenges and fostering deeper insights and engagement among his students. He expressed profound pride in his students’ accomplishments in the industry.
Professor Chan said, “I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to grow with the University and my students. I will continue my efforts to contribute to the University and society.”
Ms Lai, a few months away from retirement, is a Senior Physical Education (PE) Officer, responsible for teaching PE courses, managing sports teams, and organising various sports and health-related activities. She expressed her satisfaction in seeing her students not only improve their sports skills but also develop essential communication skills in PE lessons.
She added that thanks to the collaborative efforts of different offices and the students’ striving for excellence, CityU sports teams have achieved remarkable success over the years. “I am grateful to CityU for offering me the opportunity to teach and interact with the students,” said Ms Lai.
Ms Lai’s teaching has influenced many graduates across generations. Their appreciation further reinforced Ms Lai’s belief that her years of teaching have been invaluable and rewarding, encouraging her to keep moving forward.
