Honours awarded to CityU community members

More than 20 members of the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) community have been named on the 2023 HKSAR Honours List for their significant contributions to Hong Kong and their dedicated public and community service.

Dr Sze Chi-ching, an Honorary Graduate of CityU, has been awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal. Dr Sze has a long and distinguished record of public service. He is committed to uniting Fujian clansmen in Hong Kong and encouraging clansmen associations to participate in community affairs and show care and support for the community, thereby fostering social harmony and cohesion. A generous philanthropist, Dr Sze has donated to several local charitable organisations and universities over the years. CityU has dedicated Lecture Theatre 2 to Dr Sze in appreciation of his contributions.

Professor Herman Hu Shao-ming, Honorary Graduate and former Council Chairman, has been awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star for his strong commitment and exemplary contributions to serving the community over the years, particularly his dedication to Hong Kong’s education sector and youth development. In addition to serving as Chairman of the CityU Council, the non-profit making organisations that he has established help to promote Chinese culture and history as well as exchanges among young people in the cross-strait four regions.

Meanwhile, three members of the CityU community have been awarded Silver Bauhinia Stars:

  • Dr Sunny Chai Ngai-chiu, alumnus, Honorary Fellow and Court Member, for his profound contributions to developing innovation and technology in Hong Kong. As Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, he has greatly facilitated the growth of start-ups and enterprises and played a leading role in setting up the Shenzhen branch of the Hong Kong Science Park.
  • Dr Allen Shi Lop-tak, alumnus, Honorary Fellow and Court Member, for his noteworthy contributions to advancing industries in Hong Kong and community service. As a respected leader in the business community, he has diligently steered the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong towards boosting local brands and industries. 
  • Dr Wong Chun-hong, Honorary Graduate, Honorary Fellow and Court Member, for his dedication and remarkable contributions to community service. He has assumed leading positions in a number of influential Guangzhou clansmen organisations. Committed to promoting national education in Hong Kong, Dr Wong has donated his ancestral house for setting up the Sha Tau Kok Anti-war Memorial Hall.

Additionally, four CityU community members have been awarded Bronze Bauhinia Stars:

  • Dr Sanly Kam Shau-wan, alumna, for her notable community service, particularly her commitment to early childhood education, child welfare and development.
  • Dr Bankee Kwan Pak-hoo, former Court Member, for his distinguished contributions to the financial services and business sectors. 
  • Mr Patrick Tsang On-yip, current Court Member, for his outstanding achievements in promoting community service and youth development.
  • Dr Daniel Yip Chung-yin, former Court Member, for enhancing industries as well as promoting an innovation and technology culture.

Alumnus Mr Lee Man-lok received the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Medal for Meritorious Service. Medals of Honour have been awarded to Ms Lilian Chiang Sui-fook, Deputy Chairman of CityU Council; Ms Grace Yu Ho-wun, Court Member; and alumni Mr Charles Chan Yiu-kwong, Mr Eddie Lam Kin-wing, Dr Bobby Liu Kam-hing and Ms Susanna Shen Shuk-ching.

Alumni Ms Elaine Chik Kit-ling, Mr Edward Chik Wai-on, Dr Lam Kong-kwan and Ms Wong Mei-fung received the Chief Executive’s Commendation for Community Service. Additionally, Ms Mabel Chan Mei-bo, alumna; Ms Dilys Chau Suet-fung, alumna, Honorary Fellow, former Council and Court member; and Mr Woo King-hang, alumnus, have been appointed Justices of the Peace.
