The virtual Student Orientation 2020 held on 25 August delivered the warmest of welcomes to all freshmen embarking on their new academic journey at City University of Hong Kong (CityU).

Due to unprecedented threats posed by the pandemic, an all-round informative online platform has been established for centralising all the orientation activities organised by academic departments and university support units.

Extending his welcome at the online University Welcoming Ceremony, Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU, encouraged students to make full use of the rich resources available such as CityU-Learning, an online platform for real-time remote teaching, to enhance learning during this difficult period.

“The spirit of CityU is to pursue excellence for a better future. And the future is now,” said the President. “While you will create your own stories at CityU in the years to come, I would like to call on you to contribute to building a better Hong Kong and a better world.”

Professor Horace Ip Ho-shing, Vice-President (Student Affairs), offered some tips on how to enjoy a fruitful journey at CityU. He encouraged students to build networks by participating in the wide array of student groups, soft skills training and career development programmes.

“University is not only a place to excel academically, it is also a place to nurture and to develop your full potential,” he said.

Another highlight was the online sharing session in which three outstanding alumni and senior students shared their experience of academic and co-curricular activities, inspiring freshmen to draw a blueprint for their university life.

Fascinating activities during the orientation included the University Life Online Induction Workshop organised by Student Development Services. The workshop provided smart tips on scholarships, career development, grants/ loans, and U-life preparation.

The orientation programmes held via online broadcasting by Colleges and Departments also welcomed freshmen as they opened a new chapter in their lives.
