CityU to adopt flexible admission arrangements
Around 30,000 interested secondary school students and their parents found out more about the academic offerings at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) during its annual Information Day on 13 October.
Among the latest exciting developments are the government-funded Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine programme (BVM), the new bachelor’s degree programmes related to data science, and joint degree programmes offered in partnership with renowned overseas universities.
Nearly 100 admissions talks and information sessions were held on the day and during the JUPAS admission talks, CityU revealed that starting from the 2019 entry, the University would take a flexible approach on the admission of students who fail to meet the “332233” requirements.
If students fail to meet the minimum requirement by one level in any one subject but have an average of Level 5* in other five subjects, CityU will still consider their applications of Band A choices. Following a review by departments and the admission committees of relevant programmes, students may be admitted via JUPAS admission. Specific arrangements have yet to be endorsed by the Senate.
The 6-year BVM programme developed by CityU and Cornell University has received the support of the University Grants Committee, which will be recommending that the government accept CityU’s proposal to establish an undergraduate BVM programme as a publicly funded programme. The first cohort of students will be admitted via JUPAS admission starting from the 2019/20 entry.
The Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences displayed a teaching model of a canine skeleton and a vet from CityU’s Peace Avenue Veterinary Clinic shared professional experience at the admission talk on Information Day.
In addition, the University has launched the first School of Data Science in Hong Kong in response to increasing demand for data scientists and engineers. Its new bachelor’s degree programmes related to data science will nurture talent urgently required in industry and society.
Students and their families also had the chance to experience CityU’s global perspective through joint degree programmes run in partnership with world-class universities such as Columbia University, National Taiwan University and Leuphana University.
Under the theme “Professional, Creative, For the World”, visitors learned more about admission requirements and up-to-date information about our undergraduate programmes, including the associate degree and the higher diploma programmes via non-JUPAS admission.
Admissions talks, exhibitions, student sharing and interactive workshops were presented by the College of Business, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, College of Science and Engineering, Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, School of Creative Media, School of Data Science, School of Energy and Environment and the School of Law.
The School of Creative Media highlighted outstanding CityU student video and animation, and there were performances by the CityU Chinese Orchestra and the karate team. Visitors could take a trip to a virtual reality workshop and join guided tours to learning and research facilities such as the teaching laboratory in the School of Energy and Environment, the Singing Waves Gallery in the School of Creative Media, the Computing Services Centre and the student residence.
