Naming Ceremony of Wofoo Foundation Gallery cum Forum on “Innovation and Entrepreneurship”

The multi-purpose lobby of the Run Run Shaw Library at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has been named “Wofoo Foundation Gallery” in appreciation of the support and generous donations to the University made by Dr Joseph Lee Chung-tak, President of Wofoo Social Enterprises and Chairman of Wofoo Plastics and Chemicals Group.
 
The naming ceremony cum forum on 24 November was officiated by Mr Nicholas Yang Wei-hsiung, Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Hong Kong SAR Government; Dr and Mrs Lee; Mr Herman Hu Shao-ming, Council Chairman; Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU; and Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Vice-President (Development and External Relations).
 
The ceremony was also attended by Dr Lee’s family members including Ms Christina Lee, Mr Stanley Choi, Miss Alecia Lee; as well as Mr Sunny Lee Wai-kwong, Vice-President (Administration); Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Chief-of-Staff; Professor Christian Wagner, Chief Information Officer and Acting University Librarian; Professor Yan Houmin, Dean of College of Business; Ms Kathy Chan Yin-ling, Associate Vice-President (Development and Alumni Relations); and friends of Dr Lee.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr Hu praised Dr Lee for his dedication to public service as a successful industrialist and social entrepreneur. Dr Lee’s motto “Harmony brings a family prosperity, cohesion makes a nation wealthy” was especially meaningful, and it would encourage us to foster a more harmonious and affluent society, Mr Hu said.
 
Professor Kuo said CityU had continued its rising trajectory locally and internationally in recent years based on its excellence in professional education and research. He thanked Dr Lee, saying his generous support over the years directly benefited students.
 
In his address, Mr Yang said he was glad that CityU has put creativity and innovation to work in its curricula and that it continued to support students’ entrepreneurship initiatives. The government would continue to work with various sectors to help drive social innovation with the support of policies and funding, he said.
 
Dr Lee expressed his pleasure at witnessing the rapid development of CityU in recent years. He wishes that the Wofoo Foundation Gallery can promote culture and values among University staff and students.  Dr Lee’s donation will support the development of student entrepreneurship; a project in the Department of Management Sciences aimed at transforming community-based elderly care; and the enhancement of the Run Run Shaw Library.

The forum on “Innovation and Entrepreneurship” commenced after the unveiling ceremony of the Wofoo Foundation Gallery. The three invited guest speakers were Mr Shih Wing-ching, Founder and Chairman of Centaline Group, and Founder and Chairman of am730; Mr Eric Chen Zixiang, CityU alumnus and Founder and Chief Commercial Officer of Vitargent (International) Biotechnology Limited; and Mr Cheung Leong, Executive Director, Charities and Community of The Hong Kong Jockey Club.  Mr Li Chan-wing, CityU alumnus and Director of Li C.W. Consultant Limited was the facilitator of the forum.
 
The three speakers shared their experiences and views on innovation, and discussed the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship for the future development of Hong Kong society. The lively discussion was well-received by the audience.
 
Jewell Hui Ka-lam, a recipient of the Student Early Entrepreneurship Development Scheme (SEEDS) and a student on CityU’s Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (PCLL) programme, delivered a vote of thanks that stressed the importance of patrons donating to students’ entrepreneurship activities.
 
Located at the entrance of the Run Run Shaw Library, the 198-square-metre Wofoo Foundation Gallery can accommodate up to 100 people. This multi-purpose lobby provides a venue for CityU’s Colleges and Schools to share their teaching and student learning experience with the University community in the form of exhibitions, seminars and ceremonies.
