More students joining global internships

More than 80 students from City University of Hong Kong (CityU) have secured valuable overseas internships for the summer through the Global Work Attachment Programme (GWAP).

GWAP, set up last year, is one of the flagship employability enhancement initiatives administered by CityU’s Career & Leadership Centre (CLC) in Student Development Services (SDS). Altogether students secured 110 global internship places in six international cities—Berlin, Munich, London, Shanghai, Sydney and Tokyo—for between 8 weeks to 12 weeks each.

Last year, 56 CityU students successfully completed GWAP internships in over 30 international corporations and locally based companies around the globe.

The strong ties that CLC was building with employers overseas was proving to be fruitful, according to Professor Horace Ip Ho-shing, Vice-President (Student Affairs), who officiated at the kick-off ceremony of this year’s GWAP on 20 May with Dr Tim Wong Chi-tim, Director of SDS. Professor Ip also emphasised in his address how important it was for students to step out of their comfort zone and explore the globe.

GWAP, part of the “Go Global” Campaign initiated by Professor Ip recently, offers opportunities for students to gain international experience through overseas internships, academic exchange, service learning and multi-cultural projects.
