“Dialogue in Town”: Chua Lam shares his thoughts on happiness

A renowned author, food critic, TV host and movie producer, Mr Chua Lam chatted about his work and life philosophies at the “Dialogue in Town”, an alumni forum organised by the Alumni Relations Office (ARO) of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 19 January.

Mr Chua started to write film reviews at the age of 14 because he hoped to boost the movie industry. Later on, he wrote food reviews and newspaper articles, hosted TV programmes, and produced movies. And as a lifelong learner, he studied Chinese calligraphy under the tutelage of the renowned calligrapher Mr Feng Kanghou and Western art under the famous artist Mr Walasse Ting.

“I hope to constantly enrich my life experience, making today better than yesterday, and tomorrow better than today,” he said.

Mr Chua encouraged participants attending the event to pursue knowledge with perseverance, cultivate interest with dedication and, at the same time, remain optimistic.

“All worries and troubles will dissipate sooner or later, while happiness can be enjoyed in advance ‘by installments’. Therefore, I will always enjoy happiness first, leaving other things to be dealt with later,” he said.

Mr Chua’s sense of humour and quick wit kept some 60 participants amused throughout the dialogue.

Ms Alice Chan Yuen-ching, Acting Director of ARO and Mr Bruce Lee, Vice-Chairman of CityU Convocation (event partner) thanked Mr Chua and alumnus facilitator Mr Jason Chan for their support.

“Dialogue in Town” is a signature event held off-campus and organised by ARO on a regular basis. Renowned celebrities and professionals are invited to share with alumni their insight, knowledge and life philosophies. The event has been very well received by alumni participants.
