Soe Waiyan Htet and Phyu Sin Win Maw

Meet Soe Waiyan Htet, Freddie, and Phyu Sin Win Maw, Darya, two incredible students from Myanmar who have embarked on an exciting journey at CityU this fall. Supported by the prestigious Belt & Road Scholarship provided by the HKSAR Government, Freddie (Information Systems) and Darya (Psychology) are ready to pursue their undergraduate studies and make their dreams a reality.

Darya is from Yangon, the largest city in Myanmar, and Freddie is from Yebyu, a tranquil town on the Southern coast of the country where mountains meet the sea. “Becoming a counselling psychologist is my biggest career aspiration, so every day is like taking small steps towards my goal,” said Darya. For Freddie, an important goal of studying in Hong Kong is to make the most out of student life as an international student, “this includes forging new friendships and expanding networks as well as challenging myself to go the extra miles.”

The fast-paced lifestyle in Hong Kong is a big cultural difference that both Darya and Freddie experienced soon after arrival. “There is a strong emphasis on efficiency and productivity here compared to a more relaxed pace of life back in my country,” said Freddie. The friendship and support among students helped Darya and Freddie adapt quickly to new life here in Hong Kong. “It was scary coming to a foreign country, but Freddie arrived earlier, and he helped make my transition period smooth.” “Those of us who form a small Myanmar community here ensure we are ready for each other at any time. Together with friends, I have also learnt to explore and enjoy new experiences, e.g., ice-skating, trying local cuisines, and participating in Mid-Autumn Festival. I also made a lot of friends in classes and the dormitory who are supportive and kind. I will try my best to spread kindness like what my friends did.”
