University of Sheffield

University of Sheffield student Kerry McEvoy joined CityU this fall for her exchange study in Hong Kong.

Tell us 3 things about yourself.

1. I love to meet new people.

2. I want to go travelling to many countries in the future.

3. I play lacrosse back at my home university.

Where are you from? Why are you interested in studying in Hong Kong?

I am from Southern England in the United Kingdom but study in Northern England in Sheffield. Studying in Hong Kong became an infatuation of mine due to all it has to offer. The beautiful scenery of the skyscrapers, the relaxing beaches, and the mountain views show off all Hong Kong has to offer. This metropolis enticed me, and I knew I had to study here for my year abroad exchange.

What’s your major back at your home university? Why are you interested in studying it?

My major at my home university is Sociology and I have continued my studies at CityU. Sociology has always interested me ever since I began studying it in secondary school. This interest has continued to grow as I enjoy delving deeper into societal issues and the impacts it can have on different institutions and the individual.

What classes are you taking at CityU as an exchange student? What do you intend to achieve from the exchange programme?

The classes I am taking at CityU involve 3 classes in the Social and Behavioural Sciences department: ‘Social Welfare Services and Issues’, ‘Applied Sociological Theory’ and ‘Digital Sociology and Big Data Research’. I am also taking a Gateway Education course called ‘The Hidden City: Space, Power and Social Processes in Hong Kong’. The exchange programme will help me enhance my Bachelor’s degree as a whole and provide me with insight and alternative perspectives to those I have learnt from my studies in the UK. I believe that it can not only help me academically but also personally by building my confidence in many ways.

What’s your impression about Hong Kong so far? What do you like the most about the city?

My impression of Hong Kong so far has been very positive. I have enjoyed the sights, including going on the star ferry at night time, and heading to beaches on the weekends. I feel very welcomed in Hong Kong, and I am adjusting to the culture shock. So far, the thing I like the most about the city is experiencing all the amazing sights. The food is also incredible with so much to choose from!

Are you working on any interesting project recently? Tell us about it.

During my second year of university, I was a part of a volunteering project called ‘The Children’s Project’ in which I volunteered to organise activities for children in local schools on the weekends. This was to help some children that may have struggled with family issues or just to get them involved with fun activities. This was a very enriching experience that allowed me to have a positive impact on the community and these children.
