In the early 1950s, records from mainland China were prevalent in Hong Kong, Macao, and Southeast Asian countries, where overseas Chinese were gathered. In 1956, the Art-Tune Record Company (Yisheng) was established in Hong Kong to recast records published by Chinese record companies. The recording industry's prosperity positively impacted the development of Hong Kong martial arts movies. With solid national flavor and spirit, these works became the most famous soundtrack for Hong Kong martial arts movies.
Dr. CHANG Hok-yan will share the "Yisheng phenomenon," where folk music of that period met with early Cantonese martial arts movies. He will lead the audience back to the early years of Hong Kong martial arts films through the live performance of the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble.
This programme is lectured by Dr. CHANG Hok-yan, a renowned music scholar and former Chief Librarian of the Hong Kong Central Library, and performed by 13 Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble musicians.
