East Meets West - Past and Present of Shunde’s Guang Embroidery

Guang Embroidery or Cantonese Embroidery generally refers to the embroidery of the ancient Guangzhou prefecture, mainly distributed in Guangzhou, Panyu, Shunde, and Nanhai; it is a national cultural heritage along with Su Embroidery, Xiang Embroidery, and Shu Embroidery. Guang Embroidery was initially introduced to Lingnan (South China) by immigrants from the Central Plains. It was then widely spread within Guangzhou's cultural region, blending Lingnan's unique customs and history. Guang Embroidery stands out with its artistic solid style, characterized by vibrant colors and rich composition featuring mainly flowers, birds, fish, and worms, presenting a lively and cheerful atmosphere.

This exhibition aims to introduce the inheritance and development of Guang Embroidery, exploring how “Manila Shawl”, the representative work exported overseas, incorporates the profound needlework language of Guangzhou and showcases its diverse cultural connotations.
