Commencement of College of Science for Graduating Class of 2023

The long-awaited face-to-face Commencement of the College of Science for Graduating Class of 2023 was held successfully on 11 May 2023. About 180 graduates attended the Commencement.

Professor Chun-Sing Lee, Dean of the College of Science, gave an opening address.

Presiding the ceremony, Professor Chun-Sing Lee, Dean of CSCI, extended heartfelt congratulations to the graduates in his opening address. Looking back on the pandemic period, when many classes were switched to online teaching, Professor Lee described the graduating class of 2023 as having “undergone a very different and challenging university life”. He reminded the graduates that they have been trained as scientists to use imagination to create with persistence when facing uncertainties. “Innovating with creativity is always important in forming solutions to overcome challenges,” he said. Professor Lee concluded by wishing all graduates a fruitful journey ahead.

After the award presentation, Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics graduate, Mr. Chun Hong Chiang represented the graduates to give a speech to share his challenging learning experiences during the pandemic. He also expressed his gratitude to teachers, family members and fellow classmates for their support along the university journey.

Professor Lee presented the University’s Teaching Excellence Award to Professor Kenneth Lo.
After the address by Mr. Chiang, it was time for the presentation of awards to the outstanding faculty members. It has been a fruitful year for the College of Science. Professor Kenneth Lo, Professor of Department of Chemistry and Director of the Talent and Education Development Office, who won the College Teaching Excellence Award last year, received the University’s Teaching Excellence Award for “A Good Teacher is Like a Catalyst That Assists in Transforming Students into Self-Motivated Lifelong Learners”.
>Professor Hua Zhang, Herman Hu Chair Professor of Nanomaterials from Department of Chemistry is awarded the University’s Outstanding Research Award. And Dr. Chun Kit Kwok, Associate Professor of Department of Chemistry as well as Dr. Xianpeng Hu, Associate Professor of Department of Mathematics are both awarded the Outstanding Research Award for Junior Faculty.
Professor Zhang received the Outstanding Research Award from Professor Lee.

 

Dr. Kwok is awarded the Outstanding Research Award for Junior Faculty.
Another Outstanding Research Award for Junior Faculty goes to Dr. Hu.
