2018
In 2014, the carcass of a 10.8 metre-long Omura’s whale was found beached in Hung Shek Mun, Tai Po. This species of whale was only recently discovered in 2003 after a detailed genetic analysis. Staff from the then Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences and students from various CityU departments scanned the whole skeleton. From these scans, a set of half scale 3D printed bones was created for this exhibition, using a robust lightweight material that allows visitors to handle and play with them. A drawing on the ground shows the disposition of these bones within the whale skeleton, so that they can be placed accordingly. The installation is accompanied by rare underwater video recordings of an Omura’s whale.
