II.
Objectives:
She told me that she had successfully got a new part time job in the baker shop as the shop assistant. She needed to work about 18 hours a week. She would give her work schedule to her mother. However, in one of her holidays, she would go out with her friends but she was afraid that her mother would not let her go. Then she tore away the schedule so that her mother would not know where she went. However, her mother discovered that the schedule had disappeared. Then, her mother asked her, §You have a holiday tomorrow, are you going shopping with your friends?' She admitted. Then, her mother said that she could go out without asking for her approval but she had to promise her that she would not create any problem again. She felt very happy about the change in her mother. First, I tried to remind her that her mother had made a concession for her. She had the responsibility to tell her about her things so as not to make her worry about her. I also appreciate the fact that she strives to be independent by earning money to support her daily expenses.
Then, I tried to let her remember the painful experience of the remand and advised her that she should not attempt theft behavior again. I also told her that I did not agree with her irrational beliefs concerning theft and pointed out directly that she was greedy. She agreed with me embarrassingly. Then, I asked her what was the probability of not attempting theft again? She said that she would not attempt any theft again. But she told me that all her sisters had attempted theft in the past. They all thought that it was not a problem but they were afraid of being arrested. So, they stopped. I invited her to share the terrible experience with her sister so as to tell them the consequence of theft. She replied that she had.
Then, I invited her to give comments to my work during this period of time. She just smiled and said nothing special. I asked if she had changed her feeling toward social workers because she resisted having regular meetings with social workers very much initially. She replied: "Yes!" Then, I gave my comments to her. I thought that she was an independent, opinionated and organized girl. I encouraged her to keep up with her strong points but she should try to open herself to her parents because no one can understand each other without interaction.
Then I explained to her about my leaving and told her that Mr. To will follow up on her case. Finally, I gave her some appreciation and encouragement.
IV. Assessment
It is good to hear that her mother has changed the attitude toward CWL. Her mother tried not to use the controlling approach and let her decide to go out or not. This is the way to let CWL know that her mother trusted and loved her. CWL was very happy about her mother's change. It is apparent that CWL is a self-centered person. It is the turning point for her and her mother to further develop a closer relationship so as to break down the past indifferent relationship. In future, the social worker should remind CWL to care about her family members' feeling so as to raise her sense of responsibility toward other people.
Although it is very tired to study and take up a part-time job at the same time, it is a good experience and reinforcement for her that she should get what she wants through the right channel. It also showed that she has the motivation to stop attempting theft. Besides, she earned money for her daily expenses and reduced the financial burden of her family. It reflects her sense of responsibility for her family. The social worker can give more recognition to her contribution to the family.
In conclusion, this case will be transferred to the other social worker for follow-up work.
