Mr Neil Kaplan CBE KC SBS visited CityUHK School of Law
On 22 November 2024, the School of Law had the honour of hosting Neil Kaplan CBE KC SBS, for a talk titled “How did we get here? International arbitration as the preferred method of resolution of disputes between entities from different jurisdictions”. The event featured an engaging Q&A session with CityUHK students, moderated by Professor Noam Zamir.
During his talk, Neil Kaplan examined the historical and legal foundations of international arbitration. He offered invaluable insights into its strengths and weaknesses, drawing from his extensive experience as a leading figure in international arbitration. His reflections not only illuminated the topic but also inspired students to appreciate the significant role arbitration plays in global dispute resolution.
About the speaker: Neil Kaplan CBE KC SBS has been a full-time practising arbitrator since 1995. During this period, he has been involved in several hundred arbitrations as co-arbitrator, sole arbitrator or chairman. These arbitrations have included a wide range of commercial, infrastructural and investment treaty disputes.
Called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1965, Neil has practised as a barrister, Principal Crown Counsel at the Hong Kong Attorney General’s Chambers, practised as a Queen’s Counsel in Hong Kong at Des Voeux Chambers, and served as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Hong Kong in charge of the Construction and Arbitration List.

Neil Kaplan 在研討會中探討了國際仲裁的歷史和法律基礎概念。他從作為國際仲裁領導人物的豐富經驗中，對國際仲裁的優劣處提出了寶貴的見解。他的分享不僅闡明了主題，也讓了學生認識到仲裁在全球爭議解決中所扮演的重要角色。
Neil Kaplan CBE KC SBS先生自 1995 年起擔任全職仲裁員。在此期間，他以共同仲裁員、獨任仲裁員或主席的身份參與了數百起仲裁。這些仲裁包括商業、基礎建設和投資條約爭端。
Neil Kaplan 於 1965 年取得英格蘭及威爾斯大律師資格，曾任大律師、香港律政司署首席檢察官、香港德輔大律師事務所御用大律師，並曾擔任香港最高法院法官，負責審理建築及仲裁案件。
