E3M

The Laboratory of Energy Economics and Environmental Management (E3M) was established in 2017. It is the first and only laboratory in Hong Kong dedicated to economic analysis of energy and environmental issues. E3M explores the interactions between the economy, energy, and the environment, paving the way for sustainable smart growth in the era of global change.

Prof. Zhang Lin received his undergraduate degree from Peking University and his Ph.D. from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. He was previously a Senior Researcher at the Economic Research Center of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich and a consultant researcher at the Swiss Energy Research Center and the Laboratory for Numerical Simulation. Prof. Zhang has been engaged in research on energy economics, sustainable development, energy transition, green growth, and innovation. According to the Stanford University ranking, Prof. Zhang is among the top 2% of scientists worldwide.

CityU Ph.D. Studentship

The Postgraduate Studentship is granted on the basis of academic merit. Full-time research degree students who have obtained at least a bachelor's degree with upper second class honours (or equivalent) or a good master's degree before admission are eligible to apply.

  • HK$17,800/$18,800 per month.

Application Requirements

  • 1. Background in economics or related fields, with a bachelor's degree (only for joint program applicants) or a master's degree.
  • 2. English proficiency: IELTS score of 7 or above, with excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • 3. Intention to pursue academic research, with good communication skills and a spirit of teamwork.
  • 4. Priority will be given to students with relevant experience and research achievements in energy and environmental economics.
  • 5. Priority will be given to students with computer skills and experience (such as Stata, Python, Matlab, ArcGIS, GAMS, etc.).
  • 6. Academic performance: For undergraduate applicants, a minimum GPA of 85/100 or 3.5/4.0 from a national key university (for example, Project 211 Universities) is required. For master's applicants, an academic degree from a world-class university (for example, Project 985 Universities or a university ranked within the top 100 by QS) is required.
