A New Computer Theatre (LI-3610) to Improve Teaching and Learning Experience
With the continuous effort to meet the increasing demand for computer laboratories, a general-purpose lecture theatre, LI-3610, was converted this summer into a Computer Theatre which can accommodate a maximum of 82 students, a computer laboratory of its kind. Together with the existing 6 CSC Teaching Studios, this new Computer Theatre is now under the management of the Computing Service Centre (CSC). What makes it distinctive from the other Teaching Studios is that it is the first computer laboratory in the University with a tier-type design and the first one deployed with all-in-one (AIO) computers.
In a typical computer laboratory design layout, students and teachers often encounter difficulty having a clear line of sight with each other because they are at the same level, and the large monitors in front of the students tend to block their views. By adopting a tier-type design where students sit on elevated levels, students and teachers can easily have eye contact, promoting more interactions.
The CSC strives to provide our students with the best equipment possible. As the current trend is switching from desktop computers to AIO computers, all 82 student seats are provided with AIO computers with the latest hardware configurations.
The computers are installed with the same applications as those in other Teaching Studios. Compared with the old computers in other Teaching Studios, these new AIO computers have significantly improved the system boot-up time and performance. Moreover, their sleek and compact design has the distinguished advantage of freeing up a lot of desk space for students and eliminating the need for multiple cables and connectors that can often cause problems. Not having a bunch of cables attaching monitors to CPU towers makes everything look much more appealing.
Besides AIO computers, there are also two large projector screens and a sliding whiteboard in this new theatre setting. The lectern is equipped with the standard equipment such as:
- Height-adjustable lectern
- 10” touch AV controller
- Table-top goose-neck microphone
- New wireless jam-free microphones
- Tracking camera
- Digital HD visualizer
- A high-performance computer for presentation
- Two computer monitors
- Wireless display for Apple, Android and Windows-based devices
- Face-to-face, online and hybrid classes-ready equipment
All staff and students are welcome to use the Computer Theatre. For room booking arrangements, please log on CityU Portal and select “CSC Teaching Studio Booking” under “Campus Facilities”.
